Ceiling light or fan?

My husband and I are buying a new construction home that has a great room with a double height ceiling. It will have can lighting and a junction box for a ceiling fan or chandelier.

I was initially not into the idea of getting a ceiling fan, but I haven't seen any light fixtures I like that are large enough to fit the space, so I'm thinking a ceiling fan might be more practical and will help with heating and cooling such a giant room.

If we do get a fan, we would get a Haiku with SenseMe technology, which I think is pretty stylish and has some neat features. There's a 60" version, which would be large enough to fit the space. We would get it in the light bamboo/white color.

I've attached a photo of the room from the model home, but unfortunately it doesn't capture the true height of the ceiling.

Please let me know why you chose fan or light and if we should go with a light I'm open to suggestions on the type. Our style is fairly contemporary.

You will need that fan in the summer months. If you have air conditioning the fan will only improve your air flow, and keep the room comfortable. Light fixtures that high up do not look attractive.

Thank you! That's what I'm thinking. The model has a large glass fixture, which I think looks okay, but it's not really my style. You can just barely see the bottom of it at the top of the photo.

Das Problem bei klassischen Kronleuchtern sind ja die Kerzen-Imitate. Das ist einfach nicht authentisch und ist der Grund, warum ich mich mit den Teilen nicht anfreunden kann. Mein "Kronleuchter" im Eßzimmer ist daher eine mehrstrahlige Deckenleuchte im Historismus-Stil aus Altmessing und mit Opalglas-Schirmen.

The pillowcase gives you a good impression. For me light colours do not work as good as darker ones. The petrol (right corner) would be great. But what colour does the girls love? If it is pink you go for a darker one or purple. And it is always best to test the look first. So buy just a small sample of the colour and try. If a dark colour is too dark for you, just paint one wall and the others white.

Since you are not allowed to paint the ceiling, it should be the only wooden surface in the room. The floor can be covered by either wall-to-wall carpet or a large rug, but please check if a door that opens into the room will still be operable. Multi-use and visually light furniture is important in such a tight space. I would replace the bunk bed (you're too grown-up anyway) with a nice sleeper sofa like, for instance, Flottebo. And I'd buy a comfy chair that can be used for reading and as a desk chair. It should be unobtrusive and easy to move like this feminine rattan chair. If you don't need a desk on a daily basis, I'd recommend a height-adjustable notebook table (on casters) that can double as a side table next to the sofa/ bed. Again, multi-use is the key. Once you've chosen new furniture, you can decide on curtains, rug/ carpet and other decorative elements. Wall colors are usually the last decision because you can have millions of hues individually mixed. Also consider how much natural light your room gets.

Hallo, gerne möchte ich unsere Lösung einbringen. Bin kein Ikea-Fan aber manchmal ist es doch hilfreich. Wir haben uns für bequeme aber unkonventionelle Stühle entschieden und sind sehr happy damit, da es einlädt zu verweilen. Es sind schlicht und herzergreifend eigentlich Schreibtischsessel in weiß - Kunstleder - ein wenig Retro aber auch futuristisch zugleich: siehe SKRUVSTA Drehstuhl und dazu einen kleinen Konferenztisch (nicht ganz rund und doch gemütlicher Ess- und Arbeitstisch) BEKANT Konferenztisch, Eichenfurnier weiß lasiert, weiß, 140 cm und es lässt sich sogar zu Acht dort noch gemütlich sitzen - unglaublich eigentlich. Wir sind sehr zufrieden und unsere Kinder auch. Wer die Rollen nicht mag, kann sie auch abmontieren. Die Höhe ist verstellbar also auf jede Person, jeden Gast gut anpassbar. Lg ...

If the room will be used for lounging and TV, I'd do the fan. If it will be used for cocktails and group entertainment, I'd do a chandelier.

Thank you! Love the photos. The room's main purpose will be for TV and lounging, though the floor plan is very open, so when we entertain it'll be used for that too.

I would recommend a ceiling paddle fan. It will even out your room temperature better, even with air conditioning. You may even be able to raise your thermostat in the summer, to help with energy costs. With enough recessed lights, you may not need a light on the fan.
