retractable awnings vs. stationery

Going to have an awning installed over new raised patio. We like the idea of a retractable so during winds and when patio not being used, we can retract it. Also have heard retractable are very expensive. Is it true that many companies substantially reduce the price if installed in the winter? If we do a stationery awning, I am concerned that our view thru our great room patio doors will be dark. Is there a standard height for awnings? Any comments would be appreciated.

A retractable awning will be less expensive than a stationary awning that requires more structure to stay in one piece during high winds.

Shop around for price. Costco, Lowes and HD even sell retractable awnings. You can save money if you have a crank instead of motorized. You can always adjust the amount of shade with a retractable awning to keep the interior of your home light and bright.

If you have the skills, you can price them on line and install them yourself.

I think any awning is a pro job. The header area needs to be structurally very sound, and a worthwhile investment is wall switch operation and a wind sensor if you are in a climate or area where sudden gustiness is common. Lets put it this way: a proper install, and versatility in use, is far cheaper than a stationary awning or one that results in tearing a chunk of your house apart in a sudden storm.

We had a retractable awning installed by a pro last summer. Best investment for our south facing deck. We went with hand crank on recommendation of the pro due to the cost and limited warranty on the motors. Very expensive is all relative. A stationary awning needs to be put up and taken down at a cost every year. I would say no to substantial savings having the awning installed in winter. When we roll the awning out the den becomes darker and cooler but when we want more light awning can adjusted, a stationary awning would keep room darker until it is taken down. I vote retractable (obviously lol)

Retractable awnings have many advantages over fixed or permanent awnings. Several years ago we added the link below to our website. Our informational links are updated annually. The link provides many reasons as to why retractable is better than fixed/permanent.

Retractable awning versus fixed awning comparison

Every one of our products including those shown below are all retractable!

They are both very similar in price. Winter brings manufacturer incentives to buy. A stationary will definitely darken your immediate indoor area. Also remember lighter fabric is more translucent and it will let more light through. Lighter may also show more dirt over time. Darker is more opaque, and will let LESS light through. It will make your area darker, but dirt may not show up as easily.

There are pros and cons to anything! We at GSS fancy the retractable flavor.
