Underfloor heating for half a room?

Gabby Wong
vor 5 Jahren

So we're having an extension done which will extend the living room and kitchen later this year.

Initially we wanted wet underfloor heating throughout both rooms, however we do not have the budget for that unfortunately due to the cost of retro-fitting it. We considered electric UFH in the existing section of the room and piped in the extension part, however due to running costs, we decided that we'd never turn on the electric UFH, therefore it was pointless.

So now I'm left wondering...

Is it worth having part of a room with wet UFH? and a radiator to help heat the other sections of the room?

or.... would it just be better to get rid of the UFH entirely? would it seem strange having UFH in only part of a room?

We're planning on having LVT flooring, so it would conduct the UFH well.

(the exact layouts of the units etc are likely to change)

I’m no expert but that sounds feasible. My step daughter had electric UFH in her kitchen/diner, but after a few months only part of it was still working, so she has done that without intending to!

Rinq - Perfect, I think you're right, having the warm floor over a large area will still be really nice. Good idea about checking the calculator for the heating requirements. We're being given some hydraulic plinth heaters, including one on the island, facing towards the living room which will heat both rooms up as well. and we can obviously turn them off if not needed/excessively noisy (although I've purposely chosen mostly the quietest ones) Unfortunately I don't think we've got the funds for the initial outlay of solar panels. Maybe in a few years, But yes, I think we'll have enough heat output for the space but just wondered if it was too "weird" to have only part of a room with UFH.

Forzaitalia - I'm sorry to hear your step-daughter's electric UFH stopped working! that must have been so frustrating after the cost of buying it and installation! Did she manage to claim her money back under warranty?

We use electric UFH in 2 rooms and the running cost of it is next to nothing whilst the benefit is huge. It's the only heating in our kitchen. I think if it's good quality and installed by an experienced team with warranty it should be fine. The latest technologies available are quite easy to fit and the running cost is very low actually. I suggest you go into specialised stores and so a bit more research on your options & cost. Hope that helps!

Best to start your own post with your question as not everyone will see such an old post.

Hi Gabby, I wonder if you could post what ended up happening with your extension. We are in a similar situation and would be great to learn from your experience.
