Winter's painting is particularly influenced by other artists, through literature, film and politics. He often uses scenes from paintings by old masters, or characters from literature and transfers them into his own imagery. Winter can thus be described as representative of "appropriation art“. Particular favourites for appropriation are Caravaggio and Edouard Manet.
