Another angle of the living room. That's the fireplace on the other side of the the Koi pond. The black of the furniture and grey floors make the warmth of the custom wooden cabinets really stand out.

Media Room Large comfortable sectional fronted by oversize coffee table is perfect for both table games and movie viewing – and when company is staying, the sectional doubles as two twin size beds. Drapes hide a full length closet for clothing and bedding – no doors required, so sound is absorbed and the area is free of the harshness of ordinary media rooms. Zebra wood desk in foreground allows this room to triple as an office!

Red, the color of happiness, luck and prosperity in the Chinese culture, is the background of this extravagant floor screen. A decorative hunting scene in idyllic Chinese countryside is hand-carved and painted in the gold highlighted Chinoiserie motif. Photo By: Tri Ngo

Japanese Inspired Remodel in Noe Valley
Japanese Inspired Remodel in Noe Valley

The design of this remodel of a small two-level residence in Noe Valley reflects the owner's passion for Japanese architecture. Having decided to completely gut the interior partitions, we devised a better-arranged floor plan with traditional Japanese features, including a sunken floor pit for dining and a vocabulary of natural wood trim and casework. Vertical grain Douglas Fir takes the place of Hinoki wood traditionally used in Japan. Natural wood flooring, soft green granite and green glass backsplashes in the kitchen further develop the desired Zen aesthetic. A wall to wall window above the sunken bath/shower creates a connection to the outdoors. Privacy is provided through the use of switchable glass, which goes from opaque to clear with a flick of a switch. We used in-floor heating to eliminate the noise associated with forced-air systems.
