Western DuPage Landscaping, Inc.The goal of this project was to provide a lush and vast garden for the new owners of this recently remodeled brick Georgian. Located in Wheaton this acre plus property is surrounded by beautiful Oaks.
Preserving the Oaks became a particular challenge with the ample front walk and generous entertaining spaces the client desired. Under most of the Oaks the turf was in very poor condition, and most of the property was covered with undesirable overgrown underbrush such as Garlic Mustard weed and Buckthorn.
With a recently completed addition, the garages were pushed farther from the front door leaving a large distance between the drive and entry to the home. This prompted the addition of a secondary door off the kitchen. A meandering walk curves past the secondary entry and leads guests through the front garden to the main entry. Off the secondary door a “kitchen patio” complete with a custom gate and Green Mountain Boxwood hedge give the clients a quaint space to enjoy a morning cup of joe.
Stepping stone pathways lead around the home and weave through multiple pocket gardens within the vast backyard. The paths extend deep into the property leading to individual and unique gardens with a variety of plantings that are tied together with rustic stonewalls and sinuous turf areas.
Closer to the home a large paver patio opens up to the backyard gardens. New stoops were constructed and existing stoops were covered in bluestone and mortared stonewalls were added, complimenting the classic Georgian architecture.
The completed project accomplished all the goals of creating a lush and vast garden that fit the remodeled home and lifestyle of its new owners. Through careful planning, all mature Oaks were preserved, undesirables removed and numerous new plantings along with detailed stonework helped to define the new landscape.

Tuscan Antique is a beautiful tumbled natural limestone veneer with a range of mostly gold tones. There are a few grey pieces as well as some light brown pieces in the mix. The tumbling process softens the edges and makes for a smoother texture. Although our display shows a raked mortar joint for consistency, Tuscan Antique lends itself to the flush or overgrout techniques of old-world architecture. Using a flush or overgrout technique takes you back to the times when stone was used structurally in the construction process. Ivy & BloomHaving completed their new build in a semi-rural subdivision, these clients turned their attention to the garden, painting the fence black, building a generous deck and then becoming stuck for inspiration! On their wishlist were multiple options for seating, an area for a fire- bowl or chiminea, as much lawn as possible, lots of fruit trees and bee-friendly plantings, an area for a garden shed, beehive and vegetable garden, an attractive side yard and increased privacy. A new timber fence was erected at the end of the driveway, with an upcycled wrought iron gate providing access and a tantalising glimpse of the garden beyond. A pebbled area just beyond the gate leads to the deck and as oversize paving stones created from re-cycled bricks can also be used for informal seating or a place for a chiminea or fire bowl. Pleached olives provide screening and backdrop to the garden and the space under them is underplanted to create depth. The garden wraps right around the deck with an informal single herringbone 'gardener's path' of recycled brick allowing easy access for maintenance. The lawn is angled to create a narrowing perspective providing the illusion that it is much longer than it really is. The hedging has been designed to partially obstruct the lawn borders at the narrowest point to enhance this illusion. Near the deck end, the lawn takes a circular shape, edged by recycled bricks to define another area for seating. A pebbled utility area creates space for the garden shed, vegetable boxes and beehive, and paving provides easy dry access from the back door, to the clothesline and utility area. The fence at the rear of the house was painted in Resene Woodsman "Equilibrium" to create a sense of space, particularly important as the bedroom windows look directly onto this fence. Planting throughout the garden made use of low maintenance perennials that are pollinator friendly, with lots of silver and grey foliage and a pink, blue and mauve colour palette. The front lawn was completely planted out with fruit trees and a perennial border of pollinator plants to create street appeal and make the most of every inch of space!

The infinity pool reflects the water of the bay. Fire bowls on either side of the pool provide ambience at night. Landscape lighting around the entire property enhances the fountain and palms and lights the way along the brick walkways.

Lamb, Landscape ArchitectThis propery is situated on the south side of Centre Island at the edge of an oak and ash woodlands. orignally, it was three properties having one house and various out buildings. topographically, it more or less continually sloped to the water. Our task was to creat a series of terraces that were to house various functions such as the main house and forecourt, cottage, boat house and utility barns.
The immediate landscape around the main house was largely masonry terraces and flower gardens. The outer landscape was comprised of heavily planted trails and intimate open spaces for the client to preamble through. As the site was largely an oak and ash woods infested with Norway maple and japanese honey suckle we essentially started with tall trees and open ground. Our planting intent was to introduce a variety of understory tree and a heavy shrub and herbaceous layer with an emphisis on planting native material. As a result the feel of the property is one of graciousness with a challenge to explore.
