Luxuriant GardensRaised Cedar-faced Perennial Beds (constructed of pressure treated lumber) were constructed on either side of rear gate to reduce bed maintenance (annual lawn edging) and add interest to a backyard which originally had only a lawn and fence. The boxes were lined with landscape fabric to prevent weed intrusion from the wilderness area behind the fence and landscape fabric was also used to partially enclose the ornamental tree roots to prevent them from traveling into the bed.

Mariani LandscapeA view through the garden rooms, a gravel path leads through to the many spaces, each set up to be viewed from within. The path is lined with cushwa brick outlining the spaces. Terra cotta containers are filled with boxwood and petunia; pachysandra and bugleweed ground cover fill the flanking and center beds. Rebecca Newnham’s ‘White Lotus’ appears to float amongst the blooms. The imperfect, patinated finish of the bespoke planter represents the murky aquatic conditions from which the Nelumbo nucifera (Sacred Lotus) emerges and unfolds, with its pure and perfect petals intact - a symbol of love conquering all.
