In Seattle's Fremont neighborhood SCJ Studio designed a new landscape to surround and set off a contemporary home by Coates Design Architects. The narrow spaces around the tall home needed structure and organization, and a thoughtful approach to layout and space programming. A concrete patio was installed with a Paloform Bento gas fire feature surrounded by lush, northwest planting. A horizontal board cedar fence provides privacy from the street and creates the cozy feeling of an outdoor room among the trees. LED low-voltage lighting by Kichler Lighting adds night-time warmth. Land2c A shady sideyard is paved with reused stone and gravel. Generous pots, the client's collection of whimsical ceramic frogs, and a birdbath add interest and form to the narrow area. Beginning groundcovers will fill in densely. The pathway is shared with neighbor. A variety of textured and colorful shady plants fill the area for beauty and interest all year.

A super small side yard garden measures 30' long x 8'wide, and incorporates, a raised ipe deck, raised custom steel planters, paver patio, custom sliding gate, new fence, an inground fire feature, and grill. North facing next to a three-story condo

Cool outdoor shower with teak and deck floor. Railroad ties found on the property were repurposed to create a privacy screen for this showering space.

Playing with color and texture was important in making this small area "pop" without using seasonal color or anything that would need a lot of water and maintenance. The blackstar gravel serves a number of purposes to include sustainability (does not break down), aesthetics (really sets the turf off) and functionality (as a maintenance strip to keep the area along the house clear). This side yard area had a drainage problem, along with an in ground vegetable garden that was subject to animal browsing. The area was always wet and muddy and has a nearby basement window that was subject to flooding waters.
