MarvinFor over 100 years, Crane Island has been a summer destination for a few fortunate Minnesota families who move to cooler lake communities for the season. Desiring a return to this lifestyle, owners intend to spend long summer cottage weekends there. The location affords both community & privacy with close proximity to their city house. The island is small, with only about 20 cottages, most of which were built early in the last century. The challenge to the architect was to create a new house that would look 100 years old the day it was finished.
Flavin ArchitectsModern glass house set in the landscape evokes a midcentury vibe. A modern gas fireplace divides the living area with a polished concrete floor from the greenhouse with a gravel floor. The frame is painted steel with aluminum sliding glass door. The front features a green roof with native grasses and the rear is covered with a glass roof.

This Sugar House provides our client with a bit of extra storage, a place to stack firewood and somewhere to start their vegetable seedlings; all in an attractive package. Built using reclaimed siding and windows and topped with a slate roof, this brand new building looks as though it was built 100 years ago. True traditional timber framing construction add to the structures appearance, provenance and durability.
