Vanessa Morgan Garden DesignThe project brief was to re-design a tired existing pond that had been leaking, and to incorporate a new water feature.
The client wanted something different from the quite traditional look they had before, so we used corten steel to give the new pond a really crisp finish and to create a stepped water feature where the water very gently cascades over the edge of each level into the main body of water. Opposite the water feature we designed a floating deck area that catches the morning sun, and where we wanted to create a feeling of being wrapped up in nature - so the decking is surrounded by herbaceous planting and pond plants. The new pond needed to include fish (we created a holding pond for the existing fish and re-located them temporarily) and is a real destination in the garden as you walk down from the house.
One of the challenges with this site is that the pond is set into a bank - so one side is much lower than the other. To manage this transition in the landscape, we created tiered planting beds that wrap around the length of the pond and provide access into the water for wildlife via a pebble beach area.
We also re-designed a parterre which had sadly become a victim of box blight - using a combination of Hebe and Pittosporum within a framework of Yew, to update this feature.

UserA tranquil garden design teeming with herbs and medicinal plants. Visitors are encouraged to use the continuous path as an aid to walking meditation.
Along the path one can appreciate the filigree forms of umbellifers and gossamer fennel leaves. Awareness of subtleties such as plant movement in a breeze and backlit petals is heightened.
The layout of the garden is denominated by the path’s route which loops and circles to contain a circular water trough and round of thyme. This curved path is intersected at various points by a serpentine rill. Senses are heightened via the calming sound of flowing water, cushioned feel of camomile atop the seat and the uplifting fragrance of mint varieties.

Io LandArchIo designed the entire landscape for this small farm located in the Ogden Valley area. The Beautiful almost 10-acre site was originally farmland, and the master plan for this project envisions preserving the rural character and function of the landscape by creating a small-scale, self-sustaining farm. Io helped to program the uses across the site, planning for a rotational pasture system for horses, cows and sheep. The site also includes a kitchen garden and orchard with beehives. Chickens and ducks were also located near the kitchen garden and house for fresh eggs. The landscape was not only designed to be functional, but also beautiful, with a formal patio and infinity edge pool overlooking the pastoral scene adjacent lake.

This was built on a sloping lawn with the far side below lawn height and the near side above lawn height
This was constructed as two pits sharing a liner and underlay, with the dividing wall 25mm below water level giving a shallow covering of water to the bog garden when full
The bog garden area is 900mm deep and filled with 10mm rounded pea shingle, then water, the plants need no soil, taking their nutrients from the water.
The pond area has 3 ranks of planting shelves, all wide, the maximum depth is 1.2m
Once filled there is no indication that this isn't a single natural pond, the banks are rounded shingle, the bottom has a layer of this also, the surrounding banks are sown with wildflower meadow seed, which hadn't germinated at the time the picture was taken
The whole area was dressed with rocks, long branches and lumps of tree trunk, some of which, retain the shingle on the top planting shelf
The pond is planted carefully to give balance and a natural look, thought is given to attracting wildlife of all kinds, however we couldn't have expected the local deer to be drinking from it each day.
The pond
Montecito Landscapecustom made pond with stone edging with central fountain is the centerpiece of this beautiful garden. Surrounded by drought tolerant ground covers that can be mowed like a lawn but without the water. Gravel paths meander through this garden bordered with flowering drought tolerant perennials roses, lavender, blue spire sage, jasmine, pittosporum, rosemary, rockrose. The paths meander through the woods. Sitting areas are placed throughout this garden. Subtle garden lighting illuminates this garden creating a magical wonderland.
