The 1,750-square foot Manhattan Beach bungalow is home to two humans and three dogs. Originally built in 1929, the bungalow had undergone various renovations that convoluted its original Moorish style. We gutted the home and completely updated both the interior and exterior. We opened the floor plan, rebuilt the ceiling with reclaimed hand-hewn oak beams and created hand-troweled plaster walls that mimicked the construction and look of the original walls. We also rebuilt the living room fireplace by hand, brick-by-brick, and replaced the generic roof tiles with antique handmade clay tiles.
We returned much of this 3-bed, 2-bath home to a more authentic aesthetic, while adding modern touches of luxury, like radiant-heated floors, bi-fold doors that open from the kitchen/dining area to a large deck, and a custom steam shower, with Moroccan-inspired tile and an antique mirror. The end result is evocative luxury in a compact space.

The transformation from a registered landslide hillside to a stunning garden oasis, is truly breathtaking. The pool was updated and the Corten steel arbor cleverly cantilevered on this 5 acre property. Using a crib wall system (Slope Block) allowed us to create lush terraces from toe to top - garden pathways lined with boulders create the illusion they were always there. The Slope Block was acid stained and planted so they eye can see just a hint of the bones through the lush California and Australian native plants and trees.

This is a California xeriscape succulent garden. Clients wanted color and texture with drought-resistant plant materials. They enjoy garden sculptures, so we included a Buddha and a Roman bust planted with succulents. The previous owners of the property left behind some old San Francisco cobblestones, which we incorporated into the new design, using them as garden steps.
We built low, raised beds out of stone, also existing on the property, and used containers along steps and against existing concrete walls to soften the hard surfaces.

Part of this project was to create a cozy and inviting entry. In Arizona, there is a time of year where each side of a home is a good place to be. In this case, although west facing, which is hot on a summer afternoon, is the perfect place to be in the morning hours. A patio is behind the new privacy wall, and the existing fountain was moved to add interest against the blank wall opposite the patio, along with unique containers filled with desert succulents.

This home owner wanted to create an attractive front yard that was both aesthetically pleasing and low maintenance. Water Wise Yard Design and Decor used crushed rock, boulders and artificial turf to provide a clean and drought-tolerant ground cover, accented with boulders and with Cedar Root elements. A small bridge invites you over a dry streambed of cobblestone, acting as the centerpiece in the design. This project could be considered more art than landscaping, adding value with a total transformation.
