“Tropical. Victorian. Gothic.” This is the vibe my client wanted for the living room in their 1800’s farmhouse, and this is what I delivered. Admittedly though, I had to do a deep dive into inspiration pictures for a general direction, because, what an unusual ask in terms of concept! Ultimately, my goal for this project was a very moody, overly saturated space that evoked emotion and started a conversation. To start, I specified a heavily textured grasscloth wallcovering in teal and contrasted that with high gloss fuchsia and teal paint to trim out the entire room. This included the doors, fireplace, all window and door casings, and the wall area below the chair rail. Covering the shelter-armed, dramatic tufted sofa in a matching shade of fuchsia velvet is the centerpiece of the whole room and a true “wow” feature. The two French-inspired chairs are covered in a “drippy” teal damask with a contrasting black painted frame, giving a gothic vibe, while the crock embossed leather on the bench is exotic, playing to the tropical element of the space. Finishing off the space is the eclectic mix of lighting, pillows, and decorative accents used throughout. Although all elements seem to be pulled from different eras and genres, they all speak to each other through finish and scale, adding to the Victorian, eclectic, and collected design of the room. The color-drenched walls, lush textures, and eclectic accents are dramatic and a little over the top… but what else would you expect in a project that is tropical, Victorian, and gothic?

A cosy living room and eclectic bar area seamlessly merged, through the use of a simple yet effective colour palette and furniture placement. The bar was a bespoke design and placed in such away that the architectural features, which were dividing the room, would be incorporated and therefore no longer be predominant. The period beams, on the walls, were further enhanced by setting them against a contemporary colour, and wallpaper, with the wood element carried through to the new floor and bar.

Full main floor renovation. Kitchen, custom built fireplace surround, in house custom built kitchen cabinets, removed partition walls and decorative columns in living room to open up the space. In addition to what is seen here there is a new laundry room with custom built-in cabinets upstairs.

AMÉNAGEMENT D’UNE PIÈCE DE VIE Pour ce projet, mes clients souhaitaient une ambiance douce et épurée inspirée des grands horizons maritimes avec une tonalité naturelle. Le point de départ étant le canapé à conserver, nous avons commencé par mieux définir les espaces de vie tout en intégrant un piano et un espace lecture. Ainsi, la salle à manger se trouve naturellement près de la cuisine qui peut être isolée par une double cloison verrière coulissante. La généreuse table en chêne est accompagnée de différentes assises en velours vert foncé. Une console marque la séparation avec le salon qui occupe tout l’espace restant. Le canapé est positionné en ilôt afin de faciliter la circulation et rendre l’espace encore plus aéré. Le piano s’appuie contre un mur entre les deux fenêtres près du coin lecture. La cheminée gagne un insert et son manteau est mis en valeur par la couleur douce des murs et les moulures au plafond. Les murs sont peints d’un vert pastel très doux auquel on a ajouté un sous bassement mouluré. Afin de créer une jolie perspective, le mur du fond de cette pièce en longueur est recouvert d’un papier peint effet papier déchiré évoquant tout autant la mer que des collines, pour un effet nature reprenant les couleurs du projet. Enfin, l’ensemble est mis en lumière sans éblouir par un jeu d’appliques rondes blanches et dorées. Crédit photos: Caroline GASCH

The experience was designed to begin as residents approach the development, we were asked to evoke the Art Deco history of local Paddington Station which starts with a contrast chevron patterned floor leading residents through the entrance. This architectural statement becomes a bold focal point, complementing the scale of the lobbies double height spaces. Brass metal work is layered throughout the space, adding touches of luxury, en-keeping with the development. This starts on entry, announcing ‘Paddington Exchange’ inset within the floor. Subtle and contemporary vertical polished plaster detailing also accentuates the double-height arrival points . A series of black and bronze pendant lights sit in a crossed pattern to mirror the playful flooring. The central concierge desk has curves referencing Art Deco architecture, as well as elements of train and automobile design. Completed at HLM Architects
