Mill Valley Cottage to Home Transformation
Mill Valley Cottage to Home Transformation

This property was transformed from an 1870s YMCA summer camp into an eclectic family home, built to last for generations. Space was made for a growing family by excavating the slope beneath and raising the ceilings above. Every new detail was made to look vintage, retaining the core essence of the site, while state of the art whole house systems ensure that it functions like 21st century home. This home was featured on the cover of ELLE Décor Magazine in April 2016. G.P. Not a game player...you might change your mind in this room. Tucked in the curve of the stairs, the built -in bench and suspended lighting help make this the ideal room for gathering.

H2D transformed this Mercer Island home into a light filled place to enjoy family, friends and the outdoors. The waterfront home had sweeping views of the lake which were obstructed with the original chopped up floor plan. The goal for the renovation was to open up the main floor to create a great room feel between the sitting room, kitchen, dining and living spaces. A new kitchen was designed for the space with warm toned VG fir shaker style cabinets, reclaimed beamed ceiling, expansive island, and large accordion doors out to the deck. The kitchen and dining room are oriented to take advantage of the waterfront views. Other newly remodeled spaces on the main floor include: entry, mudroom, laundry, pantry, and powder. The remodel of the second floor consisted of combining the existing rooms to create a dedicated master suite with bedroom, large spa-like bathroom, and walk in closet. The brief for the living room included creating a space that is comfortable, modern and where the couple’s young children can play and make a mess. We selected a bright, vintage rug to anchor the space on top of which we added a myriad of seating opportunities that can move and morph into whatever is required for playing and entertaining.

The formal living space can be very versatile. We love the sophistication and playfulness of the space including our statement ottomans for additional seating. The decorative lighting highlights the arched window and custom drapery. We love highlighting the architectural details within a space. Photo by Studio KW Photography

In warmer climates, multiple seating and gathering areas can become a grand single space by retracting glass doors. When open, they permit alfresco living with immediate exposure to fresh air and sunshine. When closed, they expand the indoor experience with expansive views to the exterior. A Bonisolli Photography

Reclaimed oak from a local architectural salvage yard was purchased for the floors. The wall light and armchair are vintage. The chair was reupholstered in Designers Guild velvet and a hand-printed cushion was designed in bespoke colours. Original ceiling beams and exposed brick chimney breast add texture. The charcoal tweed sofa is from Sofa.com and the sofa cushions are vintage. The framed prints are by local artist Jac Scott.

We reconfigured the existing floor plan to help create more efficient usable space. The kitchen and dining room are now one big room that is open to the great room, and the golf course view was made more prominent. Budget analysis and project development by: May Construction, Inc.
