This couple wanted to get the most out of their small, suburban backyard by implementing an adult design separate from the kids' area, but within its view. Our team designed a courtyard-like feel to make the space feel larger and to provide easy access to the shed/office space. The delicate water feature and fire pit are the perfect elements to provide a resort feel.

Kirk Bianchi created this resort like setting for a couple from Mexico City. They were looking for a contemporary twist on traditional themes, and Luis Barragán was the inspiration. The outer walls were painted a darker color to recede, while floating panels of color and varying heights provided sculptural interest and opportunities for lighting and shadow.

This was a unique remodel project of a crowded backyard. The customers requested shade, screening from the uphill neighbors and a usable entertaining space all while working to integrate a suitable habitat for their desert tortoises. Unique elements include extensive shade sails, a waterfall with integrated tortoise beach, tortoise caves, tortoise friendly plantings, and a complete integrated landscape sound system.

The patio off of the garage is covered with a slide wire awning that provides shade in the summer and sun in the winter. An outdoor room hosts dining and leisure and extends the living space of the home. The patio is paved with concrete permeable pavers which allows proper drainage on this small lot.

The must-haves were a space that felt integrated with the home’s interior renovations, which provided a cook zone, living space, and a pool big enough to play water games. And of course, some much needed sun protection. Before, the original two decks were constructed to take in the view, one on top of the other off the back of the house. The 2nd story deck opened directly off the master bedroom. But these clients didn’t really use their bedroom as living space; they didn’t hang out on the deck either. Crucially though, the decks were way too tall and shallow; the sun could easily reach the sitting at most times of day, heating the space to uncomfortable temperatures.
