My husband and I hired GHK Architects, led by Richard Young, to carry out a thorough renovation of our period home in Barnes, south west London. Richard and the GHK team were thoroughly professional in their approach and were driven by a commitment to high quality standards and excellence. They were the right firm for us to employ to restore the period features of the house as this is an area the firm excels at. The team at GHK were all very pleasant to deal with and we’re patient with us when we were slow to make decisions. They were also very respectful of our requirement to adhere to a budget and we were happy that the project came in on budget. We would have no hesitation in recommending this company.

I have worked with Richard as a building contractor on a number of large projects both new build and refurbishment. Richard and his team at GHK are clearly focused on period properties and their attention to detail and quality is exemplary. They are also well versed in contemporary style and its harmonisation with an existing listed or other period property both for commercial or residential use. Their attentive style is to be admired and their service is all about the client and not some fashion ego with an award at the end...although if that occurs too (and it has done) then so much the better. We hired GHK Architects to refurbish our newly acquired Victorian house, primarily because they have extensive experience in period properties and historic buildings. Richard Young is entirely decent, reliable and trustworthy and together with his team at GHK delivered to us a house which is fully updated but which still retains its character and which, after 11 years here, we still love. The design decisions made with Richard's guidance and suggestions have stood the test of time. We are thinking of undertaking another project shortly and would not hesitate to use Richard again.

We chose Richard Young of GHK to carry out a complete renovation of a quite run down property. It is in a conservation area in Richmond and because of this we knew that it would require an architect with successful experiences of obtaining planning permissions in the borough. He advised that it would be better to rebuild, and he was correct. A section of the face of the house was maintained, the remainder knocked down and a new house built behind it but within the original footprint. Much to our surprise, planning permission was obtained without delay. The house was completed on time and to budget. The original house had been extended at various times and the result was rather jumbled. We asked that the new house blend into the maintained face, and create a unified exterior. In this, as in other aspects, our expectations were exceeded. Richard created a pleasing new roofline and with great attention to detail, old bricks were re-used, lime plaster was matched, sash windows were made to match. The interior is light and airy. From a client perspective Richard and his team are a joy to deal with, very professional, with great attention to detail, and very patient.

GHK were at the helm of a huge renovation project of a graded house which involved complex planning and consents - this required expertise and empathy for the refurbishment of a significant family home. the project took over a year to complete and throughout this time, Richard was at hand to deal with all matters, however large and minuscule but his ability to constantly deliver and remain focused throughout was a huge asset. The house has been showcased in a prestigious magazine and bears testament to the large part GHK played. It was completed in 2009 but we remain in contact with Richard and his firm, and continue to seek his advice - this has been given generously both in time and without payment. We remain grateful for the invaluable connection we have made with GHK and would have no hesitation in recommending Richard for his services not matter how large or small your project may be.

GHK helped us with planning and listed building consent for both some single glazed sash windows and a larger fiddly sub basement dig out at the front of the house which had a number of joins and links to pre-existing structures. Sensible, practical and generally timely approach and didn’t take any nonsense from an errant builder!
