Patricia Motzkin Architecture

Patricia designed a kitchen remodel that was contemporary yet respectful of my Mid-Century Modernist house. The detailing and materials are exquisite. Her working relationship with the contractor was positive, and during the entire process she was very professional.

I hired Patricia Motzkin Architecture twice for major remodeling projects in my former home in Berkeley. Her first assignment, in 1997, was a total remodel and extension of our kitchen with access to a new patio enclosed by a new high wall facing the street. The house was built in 1912 and I asked her to respect the existing architectural style while creating a beautiful, workable contemporary kitchen, which she did -- beyond expectations. Ms. Motzkin was a joy to work with and a consummate professional. She not only worked closely with me to produce a wonderful design with materials that suited both me and my husband, she also did a superb job of supervising the actual construction. I was impressed by her thorough knowledge of local building regulations and Berkeley's permit process, as well as her ability to deal effectively with a group of macho men (the construction company workers) who clearly respected her highly. She shepherded things through probably faster than usual, and with fewer glitches than I would have expected on such a complex project. The kitchen worked very well for us aesthetically and logistically during the fourteen years I lived in the house, and I loved it. In 2008 I again contacted Patricia, asking her to remodel our master bath and to expand closet space in the master bedroom and hallway. She produced what I consider a masterpiece: a bathroom that was classically beautiful, containing everything I'd asked for, with exquisite finishes and details, and yet restrained -- without being ostentatious or "over-the-top". Again she was a joy to work with and the bathroom was a total joy to use. I cannot speak too highly of Patricia Motzkin's creativity, her highly refined design sense, her extraordinary ability to tune into the needs and wishes of her clients (even when the wishes are unspoken), and her professionalism and knowledge (now including her LEED qualification). I would recommend her to anyone, for any assignment where she is given the scope to exercise her extraordinary talents. She is responsive, reliable, efficient, imaginative, and a remarkable human being as well..

We had been thinking about remodeling our kitchen and master bedroom and bath for the last 20 years. We had interviewed many architects over that time, but no one seemed interested in our ideas. When we met with Patty Motzkin we were immediately impressed with her ideas for our house, but she also listened carefully to our thoughts. We knew right away that she would design our remodel with skill and care and that it would be a true collaboration. Not only were her design skills excellent, but she was very helpful in picking out materials for the remodel...she has superb taste. Once the remodel began, Patty was instrumental in moving the project forward. We ended up with a beautiful remodel that fit in with the style of our house. Just take a look at "Tranquility in the Hills". The process was a true collaboration and the resulting kitchen, master bedroom and bath are well beyond anything we could have imagined. They are beautiful and also suit our lifestyle. We are enjoying our beautiful house and we enjoyed working with Patty Motzkin.

We hired Patricia Motzkin Architecture to save a project that had gone seriously off the rails. (Our nine month home renovation was in its 29th month, with five months' work still to do.) They saved the day. Patty Motzkin is great to work with. She is practical, quick, responsive, and amazingly creative. Her design was beyond anything I could have imagined, and we have quite the coolest bathroom I have seen.
