I always wonder why kitchen designers suggest dividers/pegs in drawers to store different size plates, etc. I store plates/bowls, etc. in drawers and no pegs or dividers are necessary. The weight of the items perfectly hold them in place and you could even add the rubbery drawer liners if storing small items more likely to shift. But the pegs and dividers take up room and make it a less versatile storage location.

I like this approach to living room design, focusing on the mistakes I might make. I made the first one, not having storage. I have no storage for the jigsaw puzzles I want to feature in this room, for the binoculars I want for bird watching, nor for decorative items not currently on display. One of my solutions may be to move the bookshelves from the adjacent hallway into the living room to display my items instead of storing them and rotating them. Another may be to move a chest of drawers in here for the puzzles and binoculars.

For everyone saying a TV above the FP is too high, there is a product called Mantel Mount that allows the TV to be pulled down to your preferred height when in use and pushed back up when not in use. You can add on a bracket for a sound bar and they make a paintable cover that goes over the wall mounting bracket, so you don’t see the mounting hardware. Wouldn’t it be great if we all had an extra room or the perfect place to prop a TV that followed design principles - sarcasm because no one watches TV in their living room. 🙄

Grab bars! And not just beside the shower seats. They are also very useful getting in and out of shower enclosure. Especially if you have a curb.

I like the no-door/partition options because it means less glass to keep clean; aging in place is just a bonus. Defiitely going to keep some of these for inspo in planning my bathroom remodel.

I’m glad there’s an emphasis on and an eye to the aging-in-place furnishing needs of elder homeowners. Although all that glass doors and hard flooring I see aren’t things of which I’m a fan in this regard. Aging in place, especially if we’re talking about aging homeowners, definitely does require helpfully being mindful of our prized homes’ current safety features, as well as keeping an eye as a result to staying safe when we might be no longer able to age in place in space out of which we currently own but might need to transition one day. Thank you for the timely post and ideas! 👍

Now that sounds like a good plan! Those heavy appliances being stored away, but easier to handle is a great idea. I think a lot of us never use our heavy mixers for this reason - moving them around makes us decide to just not do it.

The pantry configuration/usage sounds good.

I can’t tell from the rendering. Is the pantry being built as a cabinet that attaches to the wall or as a pantry closet with stud and wall construction?

You are going to need heavy duty pull out shelves to hold the weight of those appliances and maybe some anchoring to the wall studs and blocking. The pantry floor will need to be flush with the kitchen flooring for easy roll-out.

My stand mixer with bowl and food processor are heavy without taking into account the accessories’ weight. I would give the combined weight to the cabinetmaker and kitchen contractor to be sure that the cabinet rollout shelf and hardware will easily support the weight.

I would add: get low! Whenever I take photos from knee-level, I can keep the lines in the photograph straight and the space feels more expansive.

Am I the only one who needs encouragement to loaf? I almost have to be invited to relax or be so dead tired I just collapse. That is why the setting is so important it is like an invitation to relax...

@ruby: I have much guilt about the loafing. Part of me defiantly defends my behavior, the other part says, "have you *looked* at the kitchen floor!? What a slacker!!!" I have young kids and need to pace myself. But I still feel guilty. (how whacked is that?!)

Regarding jlmg's comment about window coverings. I have pleated shades on the living room and den windows in my townhouse. I raise them all the way during the daytime so that all of the sunlight streams in. I have no coverings on the top den windows for additional light. Although the back of the house (den) backs onto a large private property (6 acres), I simply pull the shades down at night for privacy.

Restraint elevates. Not everything in a room has to be elevated. Limiting "stuff" elevates a room. To avoid the clutter of throws and throw pillows often used to add color, use color in essential items like walls, floors, ceilings, and essential furniture. Include storage furniture in your plan to eliminate essential clutter (6, 7). If a room has a beautiful durable flooring material, avoid the clutter of area rugs (disagree with 2). Using natural materials elevates any room. Stone flooring elevates over wood, which elevates over laminate. Wood paneling or stone walls elevate over drywall. Leather seating elevates over fabric. Silk, wool, linen, seagrass elevate over poly. Authenticity elevates. To avoid the clutter of cheap art, utilize color, patterned wallpaper, well-placed mirrors, and sculptural lighting. If your needs don't call for a sofa, don't get a sofa (disagree with 1). Bad lighting degrades any space (4). Depending on natural light leads to misery half the day (disagree with 3). Light with care and using fixtures that double as art. Experiment with lighting direction and effect to understand where to use different kinds of light fixtures.

I struggle with living/family room furniture arrangements. Specifically, I struggle with symmetry. So I am comforted by this article featuring living rooms with formal symmetry in the architecture and sometimes furniture grouping but assymetry between architecture and furniture (1, 2, 5, and 10). That's my problem in my living room. I have this pair of windows in the living room that screams for a symmetric furniture arrangement that simply won't fit. So now, after seeing the popular spaces featured in this article, I will go ahead and try an arrangement of my furniture in a way that doesn't align the furniture grouping with the room symmetry. Thanks!

I am done with fireplaces. They use more energy than they produce in heat and take up too much space and focus for me. We are planning to build a new house and may add a wood or gas stove (small, European design), which will work much better.

I've been experimenting with smart bulbs that I purchased at Home Depot. They're operated from an app, and their brightness and white temp can be adjusted, depending on your mood or task. Each bulb is capable of reds, yellows, white, and blues. Warm dimming is also possible. These bulbs offer a wide range of possibilities.

I installed an outdoor shower last Summer.

We use it every day from April to November (and some days in between).

It has a luxurious 16" Rain Shower Head.

It is fantastic to wash away the day's stresses.

Some days, I don't want to get out.
