I liked the kitchen pictures, mostly for the natural light coming in the windows. Some clearly had filtered light you get from trees.
My kitchen has appliances and pots that probably wouldn't be used if they were put away, because they are heavy and hubby-the-cook has a bad back. Soaps, paper towels, spray cleaner, and hand lotion to remind me to use often. Cutting board because it's beautiful. Microwave. A snack basket because hubby likes to leave out snacks and I contain them in a basket. Trivets because the counter can't take heat. Drying dishes because hubby likes certain items out all the time.
Really, that's why most of our clutter exists throughout the house... Hubby can't find it if it's put away or even if it behind something on a shelf. And I think he is proud of his clutter, because it is evidence of a busy life. So I can sympathize with those who feel de-cluttered is "stark". Hubby described my premarital decor as stark.
I really have become convinced over the years that those of us on the two poles of this issue need to stop condemning those on the opposite end and need to realize there are reasons people are how they are. My life is too busy and so was his. I can't sleep if I can't reboot before bedtime. I need a calm clutter-free resting area or a major distraction. For years it was kids. Without them it's TV. I can't even sit down and talk about my day... It's too much. I don't like any clutter but live with hubby's. I have learned to be content with divided spaces. And it really is intolerable when hubby puts things in my few remaining spaces. I get rid of them quickly rather than waste time complaining, because he's Hubby and I won't always have him. I love him in spite of his clutter. I have learned he needs stuff out where he can see it. Someday I will live clutter-free and will wishe I had him back with all my heart. Clutter or stark is not right or wrong, it's just a reflection of people's needs and an issue you could try to discuss before cohabitating like how to manage money, kids, and how social you are. But you love who you love.
