4. Wiesen-Iris, Iris sibiricaDie Wiesen-Iris ist eine Beetstaude für eher feuchte Gartenteile – im Gegensatz zu der trockenheitsliebenden Bart-Iris Iris barbata. Die Blütenfarben spielen mit Blau-, Weiß- und Lilatönen und weisen gelbe Akzente auf. Die Blätter bilden dichte, grasartige Horste, die sich im Herbst verfärben. Im Bild die Sorte ‘Cesar’s Brother’, im Vordergrund pinkfarbene Nelken.

The flowers seen in the photo are Siberian Iris, specifically Iris siberica 'Ceasar's Brother'. This Iris species does enjoy moist, even boggy situations, similar to the way that Japanese Iris (Iris ensata) will, but the flowers and foliage are different. Iris ensata has a much broader, almost flat topped flower. Iris ensata folage is also heavier and more sword like.The falls are beardless but enormous - they make me think of silk banners. Iris siberica has a flower which more closely resembles its cousin, the German iris, but it is much more delicate and refined. The foliage of Iris siberica is also more delicate, almost grass like and is a great asset to the garden as it changes through the seasons - from a beautiful spring green to an awesome gold/russet in autumn. Iris siberica is also a great "clumper". It will produce thick stands which will actually crowd out weeds!
