Depending on how many you have, I found a vice works best. They are worth the effort. Some have laid them in a row, put a board on them and rode over them with a car. I have not tried that.

You probably need to let them dry out for awhile before you use them. The meats are probably still wet at this point, if I remember correctly, but you can test a few and see. We always used a hammer to crack them open, and you must lay them on something hard, like concrete or a rock. It's hard to pick out the meats, but so worth it. They're delicious in brownies and blackberry jam cake!

I used to live by a cove in a salt water bay. Seagulls habitually flew over a rocky island ledge with a quahog (hard shelled clam) and would drop the quahog onto the ledge below. Then the gulls would land on the ledge for their feast.

We have a huge black walnut tree and Dad loved them. Me, not so much.
We would gather 5 gallon buckets of nuts and dump them in the driveway and drive over them to remove the hulls. The nuts were picked up and cracked. Dad took a 2x4, made a small hollow big enough to hold the nut and I smacked it with a hammer until it broke. As I broke the nuts he picked the nutmeats out with one of those picks you get with the old nut bowls. He'd put the nutmeats in a quart jar in the refrigerator until he collected enough to make something which would have taken less time if he hadn't been snacking on them periodically. We also had a butternut tree, which is now long gone but the process of dealing with the nuts was the same.
We never found a nutcracker that actually worked on the black walnuts, so the hammer remained the weapon of choice.

Honestly my favorite is a crisp raw apple with some thinly sliced sharp cheese. That said I dog sat for my nephew and his wife last weekend which was both of their birthday. I made a apple crisp as their ’cake’ for their return. It was delicious though I forgot to bring oatmeal which I like in a crisp.
I used the apples in the link.

I like nearly any of the apple desserts, from apple upside down cake to a sheet cake to pie. I also like Waldorf salad and will have to try that salad of Chloebud's, I have lettuce in my little greenhouse and I like anything with maple in it, yum. I also have about a dozen pears in my refrigerator that are at their peak, that would be good too, and healthier than a Maple Pear Cobbler, LOL.
My favorite way to have apples, though, is to saute them with a little butter and brown sugar and eat them on hot biscuits.

Annie, those sauteed apples are also great with roasted or grilled pork.😋

I have had arugula in a stir fry that was delicious. More a stand in for watercress than spinach in this case.
I love arugula on pizza - is it the large leaves or small?
And FWIW, I came up with this nice, very simple salad you can make with either arugula or watercress: just thinly sliced/shaved pieces of apple, arugula or watercress, parmesan slivers/shreds, and lemon juice, proportioned to your taste - more arugula than apples and cheese, along with some pepper. Everybody always likes it.
ETA - IIRC, I did not add any salt, as the parm is enough
That sounds good! It's the snall leaves, I think. The ones that look more like wild arugula.
There were three more power outages last night. No opeing the fridge, let alone cooking, and last night was my window. I'm going to try the mayonnaise this afternoon or tomorrow night.
