Room of the Week: A Modern Classic Kitchen With Bespoke Touches
This NZ family wanted a modern-classic look with timeless finishes. They got that in spades
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
The family wanted a ‘modern-classic’ look with timeless finishes. They wanted warmth as well as a functional and robust space. Most importantly they wanted maximum bench space and plenty of storage.
We started with a Nobilia kitchen, which is designed in Germany.

What we did
They loved the 50 millimetre shelving elsewhere in the home, so we echoed that in the kitchen.

They also did not want the wine fridge to be visible, but it needed be in a practical location. It is now placed on the edge of this island bench, so that if people want to grab a drink they do not interrupt the flow of the kitchen.
We also added storage on the back of the island bench for seasonal appliances. This makes the benchtop 1200 millimetres deep, which enables the children to sit there to do their homework while meals are prepped and served, with room to spare.

Key design aspects
Materials palette: The Nobilia kitchen benchtop is a high-pressure laminate #196 in ‘Ontario Oak’, with shelving in the same finish.
The pantry benchtop is #330 ‘Concrete‘ and the kitchen doors are Credo 764. We used engineered stone for the island in ‘Concrete Grey’, mitred to 50 millimetres thick.

Key pieces of furniture:
The room’s custom-made pendant light fixture is key. Subway tiles were used on the splashback, and the scullery door is from Barn Doors NZ.

Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture
The layout is functional and works in a practical sense for this busy family. We put in a mix of bar stools to add interest and make the kitchen something they wouldn’t tire of fast.

Why do you think this room works?
This is a nice balance of form and functionality. The mother is always changing the shelving displays around, much to her husband’s amusement. They love having the fridge in the scullery.
