Hi - we really like Basalt - it does not stain easily and it is nearly as strong as granite. Our blog on stones may help you with your choice: http://www.artichoke-ltd.com/articles/ideas-for-kitchen-countertops-worktops

@Artichoke - very informative blog on countertops!
To be on the safe side, our suggestion would be to use a stone sealant. Some of the stone sealant now available on the market are very good and absolutely invisible: they are not shiny and don't change the colour or texture of the stone in any way, but make it completely resilient to water and oil penetration. We have used successfully on stone work tops VULCASEAL V201 and Lithofin STAINSTOP, Lithofin MN Stain-Stop ECO, Lithofin Nano-TOP.
Always, always, A-L-W-A-Y-S produce a sample of whatever treatment you decide to use and let it dry properly before applying it to the whole surface.

We have some experience on this topic. We supplied an Italian basalt (Basaltina in our case) work surface for an architects own house. It looked fantastic but we struggled with hot objects marking it, spillages marking and acids etching and burning the surface. Water continued to be being absorbed. We had expert restoration guys there sealing and resealing the top. Eventually and I think in this case the stains and etch marks actually became part of the stone. It seems there is a transitionary period while this happens where the stone doesn't look that good. The stains and marks are building up and the clients expectations begin to change and they start to understand the limitations of the top.

Basalt although igneous is highly porous so needs a lot of sealer. Despite that and although we couldn't really explain it, in this instance it stained and marked with whatever sealer was applied. I would not recommend it for kitchen tops unless it is a kitchen with very light use and/or the client understands its limitations. We are investigating glazed and coloured Italian basalt worktops. They look incredible. Watch this space. Otherwise I would be very careful with basalt tops.

    HI littlepisher,

Our counterparts are correct, we also work with a lot of these stones and the most appropriate solution is to explain to any client that wishes to have natural stones in a dark colour and honed finish the implications of it. For someone that wishes to have worktops that look aged in a new property, they may be ideal. Not so much if the end user wishes to have pristine worktops at all times.

Having said the above, as our counterparts mentioned above, natural stone creates a unique and beautiful patina in time, which shows age, use and the personality of the user of the worktops.

    Hope it helps,
