Urban Oasis Landscape DesignThe uneven back yard was graded into ¬upper and lower levels with an industrial style, concrete wall. Linear pavers lead the garden stroller from place to place alongside a rain garden filled with swaying grasses that spans the side yard and culminates at a gracefully arching pomegranate tree, A bubbling boulder water feature murmurs soothing sounds. A large steel and willow-roof pergola creates a shady space to dine in and chaise lounges and chairs bask in the surrounding shade. The transformation was completed with a bold and biodiverse selection of low water, climate appropriate plants that make the space come alive. branches laden with impossibly red blossoms and fruit. The elements of a sustainable habitat garden have been designed into the ¬lush landscape. One hundred percent of rainwater runoff is diverted into the two large raingardens which infiltrate stormwater runoff into the soil. After building up the soil with tons of organic amendments, we added permeable hardscape elements, a water feature, native and climate appropriate plants - including an exceedingly low-water Kurapia lawn - and drip irrigation with a smart timer. With these practices we’ve created a sumptuous wildlife habitat that has become a haven for migratory birds & butterflies.

DGK ArchitectsThe courtyard of the house was based off the old industrial marine boatyards, with exposed brickwork and small square glazed panels. Over the generations, they were often patched and repaired with different glass panels, resulting in variance in colour and transparency. The steel framed doors open into the sunken courtyard that not only allowed for privacy but giving opportunity to create intrigue by way of light and shadow, dimension, and reflection - through lighting, materiality, wall openings and a water feature.

Urban Oasis Landscape DesignSculptural agaves, succulents and California native plants punctuate the front landscape complementing the “arroyo seco” rain garden studded with boulders and branches. The rain garden catches 50% of the stormwater runoff from the roof and infiltrates it into the soil. The remaining 50% of the runoff goes to a second rain garden in the back yard.
Landscape LogicThis is the lounge fire pit area which will get a lot of use by both the kids and the adults. The flooring is made up of Belgard Mega Arbel pavers with a rectangular paver border. The boulders are natural and flank the seating area.
Chiltern Garden DesignA formerly blank entranceway of plain lawn and gravel driveway has been given an extensive uplift by way of this circular entrance garden. The focal circle of porphyry sets has ripples of planting emanating from it, set in gravel, with yew hedging and evergreen trees and shrubs forming the bulk of the planting so that it is green and welcoming all year round, with pops of seasonal colour, especially through the darker winter months.
The original gates were shabby and lightweight, and not in the right place. We helped the homeowner apply for planning permission to move the driveway entrance so that parking is in a less obtrusive place, and replaced the gates with automated hardwood curved gates set into impressive brick columns. Brick walls are softened with flint panels at the front entrance, tying into the vernacular of the Chilterns.
FormLA LandscapingThe Matloff family took a wholistic approach to renovating the home and garden of this Windsor Park garden, seeking to achieve the greatest possible sustainable impact. They used the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification criteria as a guide and assembled a team of accredited professionals to collaborate from the very inception of the project.
