This shared living space will need to accommodate our new baby boy and an older teen brother on alternating weekends. Not to mention the occasional house guest/s. In order to fit all the essential furniture a full size bed, crib, glider, accent table, and changing table/dresser, we decided to turn the large closet into a built in storage space. The refurbished changing table/dresser will be positioned inside the closest which leaves wall and floor space for the other pieces.
A dresser and changing table are essential nursery pieces, but with a modest budget and space we resigned to purchasing and refurbishing used items. With such limited space in this room we realized we wouldn’t be able to place comfortably a traditional changing table and a separate dresser. It was clear that repurposing a dresser into dual purpose changing table/storage was key. I was about to donate a tall, four drawer dresser that we had no space for in any of our bedrooms. Then it hit me that I could remove the bottom drawer and cut it down to be a comfortable counter height. It would have been a shame since it was hand built by my grandfather for my father in 1951.

A room mixed with custom DIY and designer decor complete this multi-purpose bedroom. The subtle travel theme is sophisticated enough for adults, yet whimsical enough for a young child.

To personalize the newborn's sleeping area the babies name was painted on the wall using metallic paint pens. This common detail of in a nursery could have been done with store bought wooden letters or pre-existing decal lettering. Instead, considering the position near the cityscape mural and under the starry mobile sky the lettering was custom designed and presented as if it is skywriting.

This area is for feedings, readings and relaxing.
I already owned these vintage suitcases which give a subtle nod to the rooms's travel theme. I love how much character including some neat stamps and stickers from being used for extensive use. Re-purposing items I already owned also saved me a chunk of money to use on other furnishings. These stacked suitcases are not purely aesthetic, their form serves two needed functions. They provide both storage for an overflow of baby things and act as a side table to rest a beverage, book or bottle.
This handsome and comfortable glider was the one gift we received and did not purchase with our budget.
The slim and subtle book shelves are actually chalk ledges. This option saves space and allows a book to be right at ones fingertips.
