Our firm is an idea-driven design office based in Berkeley, CA. We approach each project individually with an artistic and technical rigor guided by a commitment to craft in architecture. Our work addresses the fundamental problems of space, proportion, light and materials, and their intrinsic properties within architecture. The intensive research for each project guides the design process in lieu of following any stylistic agenda. We strive for an architecture from which multiple readings emerge, exploring the associations of program and space, material and detail, complexity and simplicity. We oversee all projects from their conception through construction and work closely in collaboration with the contractors and artisans who build them. Our project experience includes commercial offices, single family residences, cultural institutions, agricultural structures, and industrial buildings. The firm provides full architectural design, construction administration, planning and zoning analysis, as well as interior design services.

McCutcheon Construction Inc.

We worked with Alex and his team on a major fire restoration project. Aesthetically, they did an amazing job of combining the historically protected front exterior with the contemporary, gallery-like interior requested by the homeowner. The design they came up with is just spectacular. Our working relationship with the AJA team was very positive. They understand the importance of working collaboratively to create a great experience for the client while delivering a beautiful finished project. We would welcome the opportunity to work with Alex Jermyn Architecture again.

Alex is absolutely top-notch! He has an impeccable aesthetic, regardless of the style or architecture required. We hired him for a remodel of our home, and we made it clear that if the building costs were above a certain level, we would not complete the project. Alex understood this and designed the most elegant AIA awarding-winning solutions for our home. Then he found an excellent construction company that cooperated to keep our costs on budget. I have worked with a number of architects, and Alex stands out on all accounts: professionalism, knowledge, work quality. Best of all, Alex has excellent communication skills. He knows how to listen to his clients, he knows how to negotiate with contractors, and he knows how to deal with the City bureaucrats! It was a pleasure to work with Alex. Most importantly, it is a daily pleasure to live in the house he designed for us.
