Gast Architects

I had the opportunity to enjoy spending a few years with David, Matt, and Matthew at Gast Architects working on our house. They endured my unique brand of humor without complaint and were friendly and communicative folks. Having lived in the new spaces for a couple years now, I find myself daily appreciating the serene feel and carefully considered details we achieved. Put simply, we love the house.

Matthew, Camilla, and John have been working with my family for years. With each project, they bring new ideas and fresh perspectives. They are attentive listeners and always find the right solution.

We wanted to enlarge a gathering area adjacent to our kitchen, remodel the kitchen, and reorient it to take batter advantage of a spectacular view. David Gast knows our house well - he advised us when we bought it some years ago, so we asked him to be our architect. The firm was terrific from the get-go, starting with a very complete, multi-page program form to guide us, which we then went over together (along with wonderful project architect Shireen Tehranian) so that we could identify all the details. Shireen and David then worked up a plan which we revised several times, mostly by teleconference. By using a 3-D visualiser, we could see how the project would look from the outside and the inside -- any angle we wanted, actually. They always gave us plenty of time to think through the details. Anyone who has worked with an architecture firm before (and I did that a lot in my work life) knows that the architect and the contractor really have to work together well, and respect each other for what each brings to the project. Our contractor had done a lot of smaller maintenance and improvement projects before, and he and David and Shireen really complemented each other, enabling all of us to work together to produce a truly marvelous project. We've rediscovered our love of cooking, and the new space is so welcoming and comfortable.

A few years ago, we worked with Gast Architects to remodel two bathrooms in our home and are delighted with the result. We own a pair of Edwardian flats which we wanted to modernize. We had limited space and needed to add powder rooms in both flats. We also wanted to add light. Gast Architects developed affordable, practical solutions. They worked with us to find finishes and colors which enhance the flats. In both flats, Gast removed the wall between the classic Edwardian dining room and the large kitchen making a well-lighted, open and welcoming space, while retaining the historic character of the building. In both flats Gast reconfigured the space to replace an unnecessary pantry to enlarge the bathrooms. In the upper flat they cantilevered the powder room to create a roomy, naturally-lit space. It is rare to complete construction projects and to have unqualified praise for the architects' work, but we have that view of Gast Architects. We thoroughly enjoyed working with them on all three projects and would happily do so again.

I couldn't say enough to adequately recommend Gast Architects. We started working with Gast shortly after we bought an Eichler and discovered that it was in desperate need of attention. We loved working with Dennis, David and the rest of the team. Dennis heard our rough ideas and took them to a new level in creating a house with both warmth and functional livability for a young family. This was a particular challenge given the eccenticities of Eichlers and our desire to modernize the house while staying true to its mid-century modern roots. Throughout the engagement, we enjoyed the Gast Team's professionalism and ease to work with. Dennis was happy to let us lead in areas that were of interest or guide us when we needed help. I worked with Gast Architects when remodeling my entire home in St. Francis Wood. Gast Architects helped me to design my dream home and then bring it to life. My project was particularly challenged due to a less than professional contractor and a pregnancy. David and Dennis had to pick up a lot of the slack to ensure my project adhered to a timeline. That included big tasks like helping to manage the GC’s sub contractors to small tasks like ordering door hardware. They offered to attend weekly meeting with me and the contractor which I found to be invaluable. I am the owner of a small residential remodel company in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have had the pleasure of working with Gast Architects on a variety of projects over the past 20 years, both when I worked for a previous construction company as a project manager, and more recently with my own firm. The last project we did with Gast Architects was a small one, but with some tricky and meticulous installations. Having worked with many architects over the past 20 years, I can state with absolute certainty that Gast Architects exemplify the highest level of professionalism and quality design found in the industry today. I clearly remember my first project with them when I was a younger and much less experienced project manager. My boss at the time advised me that I needed to be on my A game at all times because Gast had a reputation for being meticulous, and nothing less than my best performance would be acceptable. Although a bit intimidated, I figured I could rise to the challenge and hopefully learn something along the way. The absolute best compliment and endorsement that I can give Gast Architects is that my first project with them, followed by a few others soon after, were absolutely critical in developing my own confidence as a builder and teaching me many lessons about construction that I use every day in my current business. After buying a home in the Marina, we hired Gast Architects for an extensive remodel. The house was completely gutted. David Gast was able to rearrange walls, creating a better design for a guest room and our master suite, giving us a floor plan that we love. After living in our 1898 Victorian for 15 years, we decided that it would need some changes and upgrades if we were to stay here and “age in place”. David Gast had done another Victorian renovation on our block and we were most impressed with the results. When we met him at a gathering there and realized that his clients now regarded him as a friend, we looked no further for an architect. The project involved a new and reconfigured kitchen, greatly improved traffic flows of stairs, passages and access to the top floor, garage, basement and back yard and modernized plumbing, heating and electrical, both line voltage and low voltage. Our goal of maintaining the original Victorian builder’s design and style was completely realized inside and out. Old friends revisiting the house have said that it’s just the way they remembered it, but much better. That’s just what we wanted. Our pleasure in working with David, Dennis Budd and Peter Diune went well beyond design issues. Their style in working with our contractor, Jeff King & Co., was cooperative and thoughtful. When structural surprises emerged from behind the lath and plaster, they worked out solutions, consulted us on our preferences and quickly amended the plans to keep the work on track. Their accounting processes were transparent and, given the number of changes we made along the way, close to target. We have now been back in the house for three years. The house continues to give us deep pleasure at how well things turned out. We are very glad to have chosen the Gast team.

We worked with Gast Architects for our basement remodel which was quite extensive. We worked with David Gast and Dennis Budd primarily and it was a great experience. They listened to what we wanted and had some excellent suggestions and modifications. Very organized, responsive and easy to work with. Our basement looks fantastic, it is spacious, filled with light and we are enjoying it. They also helped coordinate with the contractors all the way. We loved working with Gast Architects. David was with us on building a new home on California's Central Coast from the very beginning working hand-in-hand with our builder, Semmes Builders in Atascadero. David is creative, professional and very easy to work with. He knows just how to steer you away from making a complete fool of yourself without making you feel like one. The project took more than two years (18 months of which was actual construction) and our decision to hire him and his company seemed smarter every day we worked. ZERO hesitation about doing another house with David.

David Gast designed and executed our dream kitchen. We had a cramped kitchen in a condo. He listened to exactly what we wanted while guiding us on practicalities, aesthetics, materials, new products, etc. There was one small hiccup that David promptly remedied without cost to us. He is creative, smart, patient and easy to work with. His design doubled the size of the kitchen and yet we felt as if we didn't sacrifice anything. He maximized what we had, utiilizing every inch of previously wasted space. Our contractor enjoyed working with David; they communicated well and collaborated to solve problems. We spent more than we thought we would, but we were unrealistic about current costs. We were so happy with the result and satisfied that we spent our money well. We highly recommend David Gast.

Gast Architects redesigned our San Francisco flat into an exceptionally luxurious and livable space. David's and Dennis' design made it to Houzz's number 2 spot on the list of top 20 kitchens of all time. We have now lived in the remodeled flat for 5 years and the design remains without flaw. There is nothing I would change, no moments where I say to myself "well, next time we should do it another way..." The kitchen is stylishly timeless and is a perfect balance of form and function; it spares nothing nor is gratuitous in any way. In addition, David's and Dennis' suggestions improved the flow of the house and made the flat cohesive. The flat is in an Edwardian-style building, a classic Victorian property with small rooms, little storage, and an endless number of rooms off of a long hallway running the length of the building. Their suggestion to align doorways across the central hallway (for the master bedroom and closet, as well as the kids' bedrooms) improved sight lines, making the unit feel larger. Gast Architects provided exceptional service and was highly efficient. They worked directly with the city to obtain the necessary permits in a timely manner to complete the project as originally designed. They provided recommendations for vendors from whom I bought fixtures and tile at a discount. They also provided suggestions for general contractors and subcontractors that also provided exceptional service and helped us to manage project cost. I'll be using them again without question.

The project I photographed for Gast Architects was nothing short of spectacular. The attention to and pride of design and historical detail, the superior craftsmanship and near-perfection of execution were stunning. David, John and Jim were thorough and reciprocal in their partnership throughout the shoot, and their commitment to and delight in the project were overt and infectious. A true pleasure to work with the Gast team.

I had originally planned just to redo a bathroom in my fixer-upper Victorian and to do a major overhaul at a later point, but once I did a walk through with David and heard all of his wonderful and insightful ideas for the kitchen and other areas, there was no way I could delay gratification -- I had to go ahead. What a pleasure to walk through a house with an architect with such a creative and intelligent eye, who can immediately see what needs to be done and how best to do it! David was helpful, extremely knowledgeable and appropriately detailed about every aspect of the project, from permitting to punch list. His designs and ideas were always terrific, suitable to the style of the house, and yet consistent with my own taste. (Ironically, the ideas about which I admittedly was most skeptical turned out to be the most successful and continue to garner the most compliments from visiting friends.) He was able to bring light and warmth to a miserably dark and congested kitchen space. David helped me find and worked very well with my contractor and was also willing to work with me on ways to keep costs in check. He was patient in listening to, and creative in addressing, my concerns and objectives. And he always found a way to accommodate when I found some architectural element -- e.g., old leaded windows or lighting-- on eBay or in an antique store that I wanted to incorporate. Even now, ten years later, whenever I walk through my house, I see some detail that gives me pleasure. I have David to thank for that. Highly recommend.

I finally had an opportunity to build my Napa Valley dream home and Gast Architects was amazing to work with. I have been surrounded by architects and designers my whole life and David and Peter were fabulous to deal with. Their ideas were well thought out and presented perfectly with patience and reason. David Gast and Dennis Budd of Gast Architects designed a kitchen and family room for us several years ago. The project also included a bar, pantry and laundry room, as well as a newly-excavated basement level turned into living space. This light-filled beautiful space has been a pleasure to live in. From the beginning David was extremely patient with my constant questions and all the “what if we try this” comments during the planning phase. He made many insightful suggestions on how to achieve the kind of kitchen I wanted, a critical component of the project. The whole design process was hugely collaborative, which is why I believe everything functions so well and why I would not change anything about the space even years later. But where David Gast and Project Architect Dennis Budd really excelled was in the design itself. They managed to bring so much light and openness into the area (not always an easy task in San Francisco) that it transformed the way we live and entertain there. Friends constantly remark on the serene aesthetics of the space, yet the extended areas of the house also blend beautifully with the more traditional parts. Finally, David and Dennis had such a good relationship with our contractor, Rasmussen Construction, that the entire project went very smoothly. This was due in large part to the incredible knowledge the design team had to all facets of the construction process. Any problems that arose along the way were quickly resolved. If you want a beautiful finished project, and an enjoyable process along the way, Gast Architects will more than meet your expectations.

We purchased an historic Pueblo Revival home in San Francisco that required extensive renovations. David Gast and his team respected our desire to maintain the character of the home while upgrading its functionality to meet the modern needs of our family of 5. The project included excavation and expansion of garage, adding a staircase from garage into house, replacing interior stair railings, renovating/expanding kitchen and all bathrooms, adding a laundry room upstairs, reconfiguring floor plans, adding skylights, and adding a roof deck, along with other updates. As inevitable "discoveries" arose, the architect provided thoughtful, efficient solutions. The collaboration among the Gast team, the builder, and the designer was seamless, and most importantly, the house has been a dream for us to live in since we moved back over 2 years ago.

David and Pascale did an amazing job working with us on our home in San Francisco. The house had some layout issues and they both knew exactly how to open it up and make the house more comfortable. We couldn’t be happier with the work they provided. I don’t know how we would have chosen our bathroom tiles without them! Their dedication to their client’s happiness and final product is amazing. Although my firm, Matarozzi Pelsinger Builders, has completed a number of projects with Gast Architects, this is my first project as project manager with them. We are working with them on a large and complex residential remodel in the Presidio Heights neighborhood in San Francisco. This project was the design and follow-through of a new high-end house on a great site. The design was amazing. But addition to that, they helped fill in where the contractor was weak. The contractor was good, he just needed help. When changes were needed, as expected in a large project, the changes were constructive and creative. The relationship between Gast and the contractor and designer was excellent throughout. The entire project, even though large, was a very good experience. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them.

My husband and I worked with David Gast Architects on two projects: a kitchen remodel and the reconfiguration of a two-bedroom upstairs into a family-friendly space with children's lofts, three bedrooms, and a larger bathroom. A few years ago, I purchased a turn of the century home in San Francisco with a woefully neglected interior that bore more than a little resemblance to the Winchester Mystery House.
