Wardrobe in bathroom

Could a built in wardrobe work in a bathroom? It would be the full length of a 2.4m wall in a 2.4m X 3.1m bathroom. Or would it inevitably become damp and mouldy?

    Hi Dundrum16,


    I have built wardrobes successfully in bathrooms. It all depends on your own habits and how it is ventilated. Mould and damp can grow in any room, especially when warm air meets cold surfaces mixed with little air movement. The ones in these, photos we turned into a utility, storing the washer & dryer as it was very low budget and we couldn't afford the mechanical ventilation and heating costs for what was required in order to maintain that kind of wardrobe that stored clothes. We put in a standard bathroom extract with a slightly longer over-run (seen in the second picture) and we never had any damp issues. But we ALWAYS opened the window the whole time the dryer was on and closed that sliding door into the room as the dryer wasn't vented externally (just into the room). We couldn't afford to keep the heating on the whole time and we actually were heating a lot less than the average family (around 1 hour in total a day intermittently - which isn't recommended!)




    If what you want is basically a walk-in wardrobe in the bathroom this is totally possible! But again mechanical ventilation, heating and personal living habits will all play a part. Avoiding drastic temperature changes and ensuring moisture is under control is imperative, whilst also keeping an eye on and ensuring the cupboards don't get too full, plus ensuring the joinery is moisture resistant etc. Getting a specialist mechanical ventilation design will be what you need. It is not a "cheap" solution if that is what you are hoping for (unless you invest up front for low energy heat pumps / exchanges etc. - but a good M&E specialist will be able to work this out no problems).

    I have to admit I wouldn't normally specify anything like this except for super luxurious properties as I know that there is a cost associated with ensuring this all works successfully. If this isn't something you can afford to maintain then don't go down that path unless, you opt for storing utility items as we did and ensured that everything was well ventilated and kept clean.

      Can it open into another room ? Rather than opening into bathroom itself ?
      ie open up a wall - with SE advice if supporting wall - do you have a rightmove type plan you could upload ?

      You might find damp - even with an efficient extractor - might be a problem - but that said - I keep towels in my bathrooms and they don't get damp (well they do when you use them !)

      Hello. We have supplied many of our customers with wardrobes for their bathrooms and ensuites. We would only recommend aluminium doors and using our aluminium internal storage system called Relax. Steel could oxidise over time.

      Thanks for all the useful comments. This bathroom will have good heating and ventilation - underfloor heating, heated towel rail, extractor fan and opening window, plus it will only be used by one person so I can't see it getting too steamy. I think I will risk it as the bathroom is oversized and the bedroom undersized and spatially it makes sense. I'll let you all know in a year or so how it's working.

      Looks like you have made all the necessary prep work to avoid mould growth! Just pay attention to the material used - that it doesn't absorb humidity like a sponge. Solid timber is preferable.
