Califia EcodesignThe blending of the colorful mulches in a natural pattern helps to lead the eye to the beckoning stone bench in the distance. The tortoise is a classic Feng Shui power symbol of the North. Foxgloves, fescues and creeping thyme create a comforting understory for the lemon. The lawn has been replaced with creeping thyme, roman chamomile and blue star creeper.
UserPlant design, installation and photography by Chris Kolb of Ark Gardens. It exhibits a native plant roadside border in winter. The evergreen female American Holly (Ilex opaca) trees provide red berries for song birds and they also structure the plant design. They are the "bones" of the garden. Also seen are the Yellow Twig Dogwoods (Cornus sericea flaviramea) that brighten the New England landscape in the dim months.
