Hackett Road House, Jacks Point

Situated on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, one of the most spectacular landscapes in NZ, Jacks Point is a 1,200Ha settlement, just 20 minutes from Queenstown. Taylors were engaged to design a compelling new home that met the functional and design requirements of our client, whilst being complementary to the wider landscape of the alpine setting that is Central Otago. The team worked collaboratively with our client and the Jacks Point Design Review Board, to design a contemporary home inspired by the Central Otago characteristics. Taylors selected materials that would be sympathetic to the surrounding area such as cedar and tanalised ply with timber batons. The dwelling at 10 Hackett Road, Jacks Point references the local vernacular of rural timber farm houses and barns. The main dwelling stands as a two-storey primary form with cedar cladding. In front of the main dwelling is the Garage & Whanau room which sits as a secondary building. It is clad in tantalised ply with timber batons and a standing seam profile roof. The windows take their influence from the smaller picture windows prevalent on older barns and dwellings that can be found in the local Central Otago area. The whanau room serves as both an art studio for the owner as well as a place for her children and their families to stay when they are visiting. Facing the street is a cedar pergola which creates a sense of procession from the driveway to the entry and a sheltered outdoor area sits to the north of the entry path. The landscaping has been designed to be harmonious to the area and the Jacks Point development. Taylors helped take our clients dream and made it reality.
