Betz Pools LimitedDirectly behind the lounge area is a small section of lawn which serves as a children’s play area. To ensure durability and help maintain the backyard’s low maintenance objective it has been covered with artificial turf. One side is bordered by an acid etched concrete stepping-stone path featuring artificial turf inserts.

Thus, Betz did a landscape design to reconcile the drop with a series of steps plus an armour stone retaining wall to maintain the views from the home’s adjacent basement windows.

The designers at Betz accommodated a small pool with tanning shelf, children’s play area, outdoor dining facilities, a pool shed plus a shaded lounge area where the owners can relax and entertain guests.
Betz Pools LimitedThis overhead image taken when the pool was new shows the unique proportions of the backyard. It measures 116’ deep by 34’ wide at the house, narrowing down to 26’ at the back of the lot. This challenged the Betz designers to carefully position each of the elements so that the overall feel of the yard was one of openness.
Betz Pools LimitedThe focal point of the yard is the elevated black granite feature wall which supports an elegant sheer descent waterfall and twin fire bowls. Like the pool, it’s capped with smooth-faced limestone coping which helps to extend the modern look. The fire bowls plus fireplace surround guests with flickering flames on three sides.
Betz Pools LimitedOne of the design challenges for this backyard was Toronto’s 50% lot coverage limit. It would have been nice to have had a little more deck beyond the coping at the deep end to facilitate diving. Thankfully, the addition of a row of stepping stones in its place satisfied that need.
Betz Pools LimitedThe clean shape of the reconfigured pool is defined by the black waterline tiles and the grey Pebble Tec Tropical Breeze interior. The slightly elevated 6’ x 7’ spa at the shallow end has a black Pebble Tec interior edged with black tile. When not in use the spa overflows into the pool and looks like a glistening sheet of black glass.
Betz Pools LimitedThe shallow end of the pool features a 6’ x 16’ tanning shelf leading to elegant full width wall-in steps. The adjoining 5’ x 8.8’ spa, which is raised above the deck to a convenient seating height, has 16”-wide coping to provide seating for non-bathers.
Betz Pools LimitedThe elevated Ipe hardwood deck off the great room walkout was designed for barbecuing and al fresco dining. It was constructed to have a clean open look without the usual cross beams under the joist. This deck has an internal beam structure with no skirt, so it allows light to reach a basement window below.
Betz Pools LimitedThis overhead view shows all the elements and the backyard’s two access points, one beside the cabana, the other via the existing basement walkout. The kids love the stone slab steps leading up to the deep end feature wall, which serves as a diving ledge.

To help define the space an L-shaped black granite knee wall was built, it is at the perfect height for extra seating. A massive shade umbrella can help to shield the dining table from sun or rain.

The pergola is fully automated and can be controlled remotely including dimming and changing the hue of the LED lighting plus rotating the louvers from fully closed to open 110 degrees.
