Currently living overseas, the owners of this stunning Grade II Listed stone cottage in the heart of the North York Moors set me the brief of designing the interiors. Renovated to a very high standard by the previous owner and a totally blank canvas, the brief was to create contemporary warm and welcoming interiors in keeping with the building’s history. To be used as a holiday let in the short term, the interiors needed to be high quality and comfortable for guests whilst at the same time, fulfilling the requirements of my clients and their young family to live in upon their return to the UK.

Old World European, Country Cottage. Three separate cottages make up this secluded village over looking a private lake in an old German, English, and French stone villa style. Hand scraped arched trusses, wide width random walnut plank flooring, distressed dark stained raised panel cabinetry, and hand carved moldings make these traditional farmhouse cottage buildings look like they have been here for 100s of years. Newly built of old materials, and old traditional building methods, including arched planked doors, leathered stone counter tops, stone entry, wrought iron straps, and metal beam straps. The Lake House is the first, a Tudor style cottage with a slate roof, 2 bedrooms, view filled living room open to the dining area, all overlooking the lake. The Carriage Home fills in when the kids come home to visit, and holds the garage for the whole idyllic village. This cottage features 2 bedrooms with on suite baths, a large open kitchen, and an warm, comfortable and inviting great room. All overlooking the lake. The third structure is the Wheel House, running a real wonderful old water wheel, and features a private suite upstairs, and a work space downstairs. All homes are slightly different in materials and color, including a few with old terra cotta roofing. Project Location: Ojai, California. Project designed by Maraya Interior Design. From their beautiful resort town of Ojai, they serve clients in Montecito, Hope Ranch, Malibu and Calabasas, across the tri-county area of Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles, south to Hidden Hills. Wesley Ellen Design & Millwork
Maggie's kitchen is a great example of Wesley Ellen Design & Millworks' 'Cottage Collection' of custom, design-it-yourself cupboards.
By creating our 'Cottage Collection', we wanted to provide a way for us to work with clients throughout North America to collaboratively design affordable, timeless kitchens. A key component in this is the face-framed cabinets with inset doors.
This is exactly what happened on this project, only it happened before we introduced our 'Cottage Collection.' Homeowners Rory and Maggie Daly came to us with a wishlist that included a kitchen with an English cottage feel to it. We worked collaboratively with Maggie in creating the design and then we built the cupboards to suit their needs. Rory, a carpenter by trade, install the cupboards on site.

This traditional dining room has an oak floor with dining furniture from Bylaw Furniture. The chairs are covered in Sanderson Clovelly fabric, and the curtains are in James Hare Orissa Silk Gilver, teamed with Bradley Collection curtain poles. The inglenook fireplace houses a wood burner, and the original cheese cabinet creates a traditional feel to this room. The original oak beams in the ceiling ensures this space is intimate for formal dining. Photos by Steve Russell Studios
