“Over 30 years ago, early in his career, Sam Sherman worked on the design of the Chilmark home of our best friends. Our friends introduced us to the Vineyard, and were always very happy with the efficiency of their home and the excellent use of light. When we were able to purchase our own home on the island, Sam was our first choice as a designer, given the positive experience our friends had over the years. We purchased a dark, dingy home and did a near tear down of the existing structure. Sam saw what we did not see, that by reorienting the house we came away with incredible light and views. The design plan he provided not only gave us incredible views but the detail enabled the Contractor to bid the job to the penny. We needed a variance from the town to execute the plan and did not want to buy the house until we knew we could make the changes. Sam’s team dealt with the Edgartown planning board very effectively and efficiently to get the job approved in only 4 weeks. Because we are not full time residents of the island, we also had Sam run the contractor selection process and provide construction oversight. We have built a number of homes before but never have we been on budget and on schedule and never before have we been as pleased with the end result.
