NEED HELP PERIOD......

We just bought about 80 acres tucked in the woods - Southern Colorado. It's magnificent land with trees and rocks. There is a cabin already erected that needs to be finished - it sits at the top of a mountain at 9200 feet. There is also a metal bldg that has 2 br/1 bath ...really just needs some tlc. We would love to finish these two projects as economically as we can - for our kids...and then build something for us. We need help. We don't know how to do...but don't want to be taken advantage of. Our budget is limited. First thing on the list is to drill for a well at the bottom of the mountain and trench the water up to the building sites. Welcome to our piece of heaven.

We have a blog that will be featured soon on Redfin on working with an interior designer. You will want to find a licensed designer or architect to help to make sure you have structurally sound places given the kid factor. Know your budget, stick to it, and be willing to make the occasional concession to stick within your budget. I'm jealous. Your place sounds fabulous and you will just love it in the end!

This all said, what will make or break your budget will be a good contractor, or the right places to get materials at a reasonable cost and a solid time investment. Please feel free to email us and we can send you some things to look out for as you find a qualified professional.

Thank you! Kid factor isn't exactly a problem since all of our kids are over the age of 25...but we are excited at the possibilities - unfortunately, this is tucked 5 miles up a road and it is difficult to find honest...reasonable construction help. The land is seriously crazy beautiful. Thanks again!

Wir haben uns als Kombination mit der Natursteinwand für chinesischen Blaustein entschieden, weil der natürliche Stein sich wunderbar weich anfühlt und mit den Jahren eine schöne Patina bekommt. Mit den breiten Fugen wirkt das Ganze nicht zu clean und neu und ist für Fußbodenheizung ( und Haushalt mit Hund und Kind ) ideal. Offenporiger Stein kann versiegelt werden, ist für Säuren allerdings immer anfällig. Das macht allerdings auch den besonderen Reiz aus. Das Material wird mit den Jahren immer schöner. Viel Freude beim Aussuchen !

Hi Nicola, thank you so so much. Its just so nice. So pretty. The good thing is its not a mind bender. I was already thinking something on the lines. But the elements had to fit together. And now it looks they do. What I had not thought at all is the upholstery thing. It’s so nice. Even if I cannot do uphostry , I have gotten the idea now. I would somehow make the back of shelves and the heastbound side of bed same or coordinated, in order to make it kind of cozy niche corner as you have nicely put it. For shelves I was thinking to use a single piece or may a two pieces of 4x4 shelves like IKEA Kalax to creat a kind of partition of about 120 cm As I said I was thinking of similar things but as it comes from an expert I feel very happy. One more thing. For the colors would you recommend the ones I see already in the Sketsch??? Secondly, for the floor in the second / Upper room i was thinking of using small rugs in different colors witha kind of collage ( the pupose being easy maintainece, as a bigger carpet has to be send for professional carpet cleaners or need carpet cleaning machine). Small rugs if one is spoiled is easier to replace , which not easy in case of a bigger one that is wall to wall and heavy. Small rugs are easy to clean an rearrange. Of course under that I can add a light floor matt under these rugs to hold them together.( In both cases what colors , should be good. I mean if I add one piece carpet that would be almost half of the room, which colors should I take) or do you think it will make the rather smaller place look too busy and I should go for a full size carpet? Sounds beautiful!

We fell in love with some land in the Western US as well. We thought it would be relatively easy and fun to build something we both loved. But honestly, it was quite challenging and it is taking longer and costing more than we had initially estimated. And it hasn't been fun. And I think we are most likely closer to town than you are.

First you need to know what all of your options are before you can make an informed decision. You might want to explore modular and kit homes. It might be easier to truck 4 pieces into the woods and place them on the site with a crane and bolt them together than have a crew build a custom home. Though contemporary modular homes are not necessarily cheap, they might be a solution for the problem of not having enough trades in the area.

Thanks!....yes, we have talked about something modular. We have these two buildings that we would love to fix up..it won't take much to make them super cool - but we would like to build our own place as well - maybe just a little bit larger. I just can't live in 200 square feet with all of my kids, dogs, and a cat. I can't..I admire everyone that can - and we have gotten rid of a lot of stuff..but we have so much more that can go...it's a process and a frustrating one at that. The land we found is in Weston, CO...southeastern part of the state. Near Trinidad and Pueblo...pretty much off of the beaten track - but magnificent and peaceful..something I really need right now. BIG TIME!
