Does anyone know what style house this is? I would appreciate ideas on what details I can add to add depth and dimension. Would like to change columns but what kind should I use. The faux stone is permastone from the 50's and not very attractive but I can't change it right now. I plan on doing some landscaping also. I would love some pictures of different options cause I'm not good at imagining what something would look like. Thank you all, Sarah

Here are a couple of versions to help add curb appeal.

Some suggestions...

1. Add muntins to the windows.

2. Connect your front and side porticoes with a wraparound structure.

3. Invite guests with a curved walkway.

4. Layer the landscape with low-maintenance plantings

The first mock-up is a full-on porch. You'd keep the main roof structure of your portico, but adjust the front to include a small archway with a hanging light. The columns are beefed up, and the door has sidelites and new beefy trim. The stairs are wider.

The second mock-up has a more substantial portico with a hip roof and a pergola on both sides and wrapping around the right side of the house. (This could also be done by tweaking the existing portico). Columns are thicker, yet, and the door and sidelights are a bit more substantial. The stairs make the entrance grand.

Now you're the envy of the block:)

I think it's called a rancher but I could be wrong. I really like the color of the cedar shakes. For a quick fix I would paint the stone the same as the shakes (or paint it all a deeper blue/grey), paint anything white a creamy white, paint the door your favourite colour (I'd go with an orangey red or milky turquoise). Not sure how to do it but I think a more substantial but not fussy column would look good.

I'm not good at landscaping but would suggest tiger lillies along the border and depending where the driveway is (I can only load 1 pic) an L shaped or curving walkway with paver stones later on. Maybe a couple of brightly colored adirondack-type chairs.

Once you have the main part done, you could repost all of your hard work and let people send different colour options for the door to you. You have yourself a great home. :)

Beautiful house - pretty sure it's a ranch! Is this the front? Is there a sidewalk? I would do something tall on the corner of the house away from the porch. Line the porch with some gorgeous flowers, fairly tall, lilies are a good idea or even just some rosebushes (some of these really are a good size and low maintenance). You don't have to just plant things right next to the house. Go out and away in semi-circle around the corner. Get that planter off the window (none of the others have one). Some chairs or a few pots on the deck would add some height and depth to this area. I'm not sure if chairs are practical out here since the roof does not go over the wraparound porch.

I'd suggest a neutral, rather "grown-up" style as a basis and childlike, cute little details to create a room appropriate to your daughter's age. How about a grayish or brownish wall color, like Farrow & Ball's Mouse's Back or Light Gray? Golden Polka dots could be easily applied and removed when you choose wall stickers (https://www.houzz.com/products/vinyl-wall-sticker-decal-art-polka-dots-by-urban-walls-set-of-50-prvw-vr~4971601). They add a cute yet modern and stylish touch. I love this idea! Go for white curtains in case you paint your walls. I personally love the haptic of nya nordiska's LIMA, it's made of wool (http://www.nya.com/de/product/lima). In case of white walls, go for a rather striking curtain. nya nordiska even offers a transparent material with little golden dots (http://www.nya.com/de/product/puntilla-cs)! Now that you have the basis, add colorful details to the room. A striking carpet, a floor lamp, toys... They look great in grayish surroundings but can be changed any time. Also bei den Tiny Homes findet man immer wieder schöne Lösungen, die auch für kleine Wohnungen nachvollziehbar sind. Wohnmobile haben auch optimale Platzausnutzung. Hi Nicola, thank you so so much. Its just so nice. So pretty. The good thing is its not a mind bender. I was already thinking something on the lines. But the elements had to fit together. And now it looks they do. What I had not thought at all is the upholstery thing. It’s so nice. Even if I cannot do uphostry , I have gotten the idea now. I would somehow make the back of shelves and the heastbound side of bed same or coordinated, in order to make it kind of cozy niche corner as you have nicely put it. For shelves I was thinking to use a single piece or may a two pieces of 4x4 shelves like IKEA Kalax to creat a kind of partition of about 120 cm As I said I was thinking of similar things but as it comes from an expert I feel very happy. One more thing. For the colors would you recommend the ones I see already in the Sketsch??? Secondly, for the floor in the second / Upper room i was thinking of using small rugs in different colors witha kind of collage ( the pupose being easy maintainece, as a bigger carpet has to be send for professional carpet cleaners or need carpet cleaning machine). Small rugs if one is spoiled is easier to replace , which not easy in case of a bigger one that is wall to wall and heavy. Small rugs are easy to clean an rearrange. Of course under that I can add a light floor matt under these rugs to hold them together.( In both cases what colors , should be good. I mean if I add one piece carpet that would be almost half of the room, which colors should I take) or do you think it will make the rather smaller place look too busy and I should go for a full size carpet? If I owned it I would "beef-up" the front porch columns using Fypon products. Keep in clean and simple. I would use the same Fypon columns on the side porch and screen it in. I would re-do the front steps and have them flair out (bottom step is widest & steps narrow as they rise). The house is off balance and is weighted to the right side w/ a patio & porch. Counter balance that w/ a large landscaping bed off the left side. The landscaping bed will need a tree or large bush to add some weight. I can't tell where your driveway is located so not sure which way your walkway will wind. Depending on how you use your yard you may want to think about a second access (steps) to the patio area. If you put a second set of steps in I would have them lead to another patio. Think tiered w/ maybe a firepit or something that would draw people to use both patios. I would use planter boxes on the edge of the patio (matching your window box) to give the patio a barrier. People aren't comfortable walking near a ledge. Lastly I would paint the faux stone veneer in a craftsman color palette. Paint your downspouts to match the house color or look into rainchains. You may need a windowbox under the big window on the left to balance the house. Good luck!

HI -- Your house is a Ranch bungalow or some call it a tract ranch . You could have bigger square posts and you could build a pergola over the front deck and it really needs a railing around that deck area. You could do spindle railings or the metal framed glass panels for a more modern look . But the landscaping will make the big differance to the house. Put some hedging or a row of flowering perennials in front of the deck area . Like day lilies ( stella d oro- their yellow ) or your choice of what works in your zone. Put in a curved walkway to your front door. And more trees would help too. There is lots of landscaping ideas for bungalows on Houzz .Your local garden centre can help you also .

Wow, thanks to you all. I love both your ideas... Pergola over top of the opened section, steps that flair, and the columns are all things that I have seen on Houzz that have already caught my eye. Was also thinking of a front door like this one posted. I was hoping someone would say to paint this faux stone because I really think it would look better but have been steered away from the idea from others (not sure why). I think the stone has too much orangey yellow to it. I like the way the top of the gable is in this picture -- (the arch not the trim-not sure what it is called). Last fall I moved this dogwood to the corner of the house (this picture shows it) but not sure if I put it close enough or if I should move it somewhere else and put a nice crape myrtle at the corner. Definately a walkway and landscaping is in order also. The door to the right side of the wrap porch does have steps they are just on the other side of the camelia.

I really like your house--clean, simple and pleasant lines. Call me crazy, but I like the faux stone. It gives a crisp appeal to the rancher. But it's your house and your choice. However, as it is right now, the pediment/gable over the entry looks severely top-heavy. I think beefing up the columns, square, not round, would help alot. Plus increasing the width of the steps leading up to the entry and making more of a presence with them would help. Personally, I think flaring steps would not be in keeping with the rectalinear style of the house but, again, your choice. I like the pergola idea but I think you've got more than enough happening on the right side of the house. The left side needs attention to balance out the curb appeal. It's screaming for something to draw the viewers' eyes. Am I right in assuming there's some living area on the left side of the house with the big picture window? I see a fireplace on that side too. If you're going to use landscaping to benefit your curb appeal, I think you should develop something worthwhile and eyecatching, from inside as well as outside, on the left side of the house. Perhaps a walkway leading up to the front door but meanders toward the left side of the house, if such a thing is allowed in your neighborhood. Anyway, I'm sure whatever you decide to do, it's going to look pretty good cuz you've got a great house to start with.

You are right the left side is screaming. The walkway leading that way would steer the eyes that way but there isn't anything over there, just the hedge dividing the houses. Maybe some larger ornamental plantings at that corner would help. 100 % agree with the columns that is a sure thing!

HI - Yes you could paint the stone - exterior masonary paint - sprayed on. Yes the Bostworth house ( yellow one ) is a good example to go by for the posts and the pergola .

How about shutters on each side of the windows to give it more of a cottage look? Either paint them a contrasting color, with the front door the same color, or just a creamy white.

It is a rather old ranch style home. They became very popular in the 50's 70's. An inex[ensive fast way to buikd a house. They can be a fancy or as casual asyou like, butare mostly kown for the type of fplks who enjoy get togethers with neighbors andfrienda on the weekend. We call the "Ranch" here in Michigan, Other states call them :ranchers: or "Ramblers" :>) have a nice nite!

Hey Sarah,

Just adding my 2.5 cents worth - as I practice Value Construction - & just can't help m'self when I see some relatively inexpensive options that don't involve construction!

In a perfect world I would demo the existing pediment over the steps as I believe it is the wrong style & scale for your sweet house.

Yes, paint the siding!!

Please Talk to your local exterior paint experts - I've seen various houses from the 50's completely transformed and would think the same paint product (spray on) would work on your siding. Have them do a test at the back.

This is Not, not, not a DIY project as you can easily screw the end result and your future resale - perfect masking is critical, wind direction, humidity or lack / temperature before, during & after for curing etc etc.

Certain things are better left to pros when tweaking what is typically our largest asset -but in my opinion.

I think there are a couple of styles going on with your house which is why it is confusing.

I would lose the need to 'decorate with white columns' personally - as you could have a more contemporary look with a couple of paint tricks and something other than a white finish to the columns.

Is it possible to reduce the number of down spouts or relocate?

They give far too many vertical lines - then add a couple of white columns and you have a funky piece of abstract art taking shape.

If it isn't possible - then just paint the spouts the same color you decide for the house so they 'disappear'. In white they are being featured as they are.

Change the door to a more modern looking wood/veneer door with a side lite (window beside the door) if possible.

Darken the siding behind the landscaping on the right hand side so it too disappears. Very dark brown/earth color will set off your shrubbery.

With clever detail and paint you can create the illusion of 'level' for the porch on the right when the the dark (brown/earthtone) is applied.

I have a quick detail that I'll send you if you are interested. It only takes me a second. gennxo

put a pergola over the front porch and beef up the columns as others have suggested , shutters to make it more cottage cozy looking and nice landscape with color. Build out a landscape bed on left side with a real garden feel, irregular shape and some oversized flagstone stepping stones meandering in a slight angle to front door. A little bench outside in the "garden " area and rockers on the porch! Could be very, very cute! Don't even worry about the stone for now. If you highlight the other areas and they become the interest, you will direct the eye away from that anyway.Best of luck!

I would paint the faux stone either off-white or beige. If off-white (making it look like Austin stone), I would paint the trim around the windows a taupey-beige (keep it light) and the front door a dark seal skin gray. I would definitely have huge vases and patio furniture on the front porch. I like various grasses (as in Maiden grass) for landscaping with various textures and colors. You could have zebra grass, maiden grass, fountain grass, lirope, purple fountain grass, add some texture and color with Shi-shi sasanqua camilla, some dwarf nandina. Keep landscaping fairly low around the porch so it doesn't grow taller than the height of porch. DO NOT put shrubs in that are squared off that you see everywhere else. This is a very cute house and you want to keep it cute, unique and simple but beautiful. P.S. If you like red, you could paint the front door RED.

Those shrubs you have now are bad about putting roots up under the house.
something on the side - a nice medium sized tree - dont know your climate #, but a tree off to the left and then another closer to the street if yours is a busy one. Make a kidney shape panting bed that takes in both trees - you really dont want anyone "straight lined" effects...

I personally like the stone effect. But then I do agree about the front being not being in proportion to the rest of your house. I DO like the screened in porch on the right side idea. I live in Houston - home of the oriole sized skeeters.. lol

Finally, there's some neat home improvement software programs around - $100? - CHEAP way to play with all the sugggestions you've been lovingly given here. Check out the reivews and get one and start dreaming!

I like the cape cod look myself and with off white pain on the stones a curved or straight brick walkway (for a more formal look that you could plant a wildflower bed on either side of to soften) window muntins and I don't know if there's money in the budget for small dormer windows but that could bring light into the crawl space so it could be more usable.chunky granite stpes. and boxwood in front of the porch on the left with daylillies and some hydrangea in there it would be beautiful.

I love the curved stone walkway - oh how I wish my yard had the space for something like that - LOL. For my house I've been playing with adding brick to my walkways/steps. It's just deciding how much to use that is holding me back at the moment :-) Good luck with your updates - look forward to progress pictures! I know how you feel, my updates will be made in baby steps also --- when I figure out what to do that is!

I am about to shop for porch columns what size do you guys recommend and square or round? I want to make the steps wider like the picture of second mock-up above what materials should I use for them?

For the pergola, round. Ten inches on the bottom tapered to eight inches on the top (roughly).

For the porch, square. Same dimensions.

Clear pine for the stairs. Make sure you prime and paint all sides for easier maintenance and to help prevent rot down the road. You could use a PVC or vinyl product, as well. There would be less maintenance, but wood feels warmer and more inviting (and is usually less expensive).

Hey Sarah, do you plan on doing a Full On Reno option? - if so then just hit delete?

If not, you could simply WRAP your existing porch columns with either vinyl kits from Lowes or HD - they come in 8" width options I believe (watch the documentary Vinyl first however) $80.00 each approx.

Or, choose a professional carpenter - not a Cowboy - who can work without detailed drawings & follow what 'ourfarmhouse' suggests for look if you like it - and 'WRAP' those columns with wood/veneer instead.

A WRAP project is a weekend 'fit-up' and very inexpensive to do - without having to remove your existing posts which can result in costly structural issues when not planned properly.

You will also see a noticable change in a short period of time which is quite motivating.

I've done a rough illustration so you can have a sense of what I am suggesting here and in my previous comment.

Colors could be anything you like. Wood stain or finish - up to you - the Vinyl is limited to just a couple of factory colors + white. I haven't seen them painted to know if it is successful or not.

Not knowing your City Zoning requirements please note my ideas or product recommendations are for jumping off points and only what I am familiar with.

I like the house and the stone. Please loose the giant gutters! I really like the mockup done with the arched cover and open pergola roof over the deck. Would be worth every penny. If too much just make bigger columns, add shutters, window boxes and planters along deck.
