Kitchen blue? Is it too much?

This blue I chose when the kitchen was enclosed by cabinets you can see we just took down in the foreground. Now that blue wall gets way more light and there is a natural extension of the paint on the wall extending on to the new open room. I am concerned the blue is now to bright and there will be more than I had intended for this color.
The cabinets are all getting painted white with new hardware stainless steel and all new appliances will be stainless as well.
Thoughts?

It looks crisp!.. Colour changes can be startling at first, so if it melds w your decor, give yourself time to adjust. By the time your room is set back to rights, it will not seem as flashy to you as it seems to now. Pretty choice.

Great look! Adding a warm color to accessories and the beige on the other wall bring it together. We have a mostly beige home (French beach style). However, our huge area rug has soft greens and blues. A room with all cool or all warm color is boring.

Hi Ella, wow, that looks like a real challenge... The really low "Kniestock" together with your size doesn´t work well. I think you need to move the kitchen pretty far into the room to be able to properly move around and operate the kitchen. For instance if you imagine standing in front of the sink - if i read the floorplan correctly, if you move just a little bit to the right, you´ll bump your head into the angled wall. In addition, the whole area below the angled wall is actually not usable for a worktop area, because it´s just too low. Even if you place storage room there, it´s not really comfortable to reach. Can you add some more picture of the rest of the room? I think you need a complete layout including dining area and living room area and not only focus on the kitchen. Cheers, TH

Hi Ella, first of all, let me say that you have some really nice vintage pieces in your home! If you are planning to keep the light grey rug I would go with a darker shade of grey for the daybed and a lighter shade or a completely different color for the fabric of the sidechair (e.g. like the dark blue in your third photo) in order to create more contrast and give the room a more dynamic feel. You also mentioned a portrait to be hung above the sideboard - maybe the colors of this picture can aslo inspire the fabrics, it's always nice if the same color pops up in different details of a room. Juhu und Hurra, es gibt kein Hausverbot beim Küchenstudio und ich freue mich wirklich sooo sehr, dass es dieser Entwurf wird! Es war wirklich ein schwere Geburt...wenn ich das so sagen darf ;-) Aber diese doch sehr intensive Beratung und die vielen Visualisierungen haben sich für Sie vollumfänglich gelohnt. Wenn wir nicht so hartnäckig geblieben wären, hätten Sie jetzt bereits für eine Küche unterschrieben, die gar nicht zu Ihnen, Ihrem Leben und folglich Ihrem neuen Haus gepasst hätte. Ich bedanke mich auch bei Anke, die ja wirklich mehrmals auf meinen Entwurf gepocht hat, denn sie ist ja unser Küchenass. Es war ein wirklich intensiver Thread (der mich ganz schön von der Arbeit abgehalten hat...puh...;-)) Vielleicht haben Sie ja Lust mir eine kleine Bewertung in meinem Houzz Profil zu schreiben. Hallo Sonja, das kommt noch so ein bisschen auf mehrere Faktoren an. Werdet ihr Oberschränke haben? Auch das Küchenlayout, der Lichteinfall... Am besten ist immer ausprobieren. Also entweder Küchenfront mit ins Fliesengeschäft oder umgekehrt und dann noch beides in deine Küche. ;-) Ganz pauschal allerdings würde ich bei einer recht kleinen Küche eher auf glatte, also keine klassischen Fronten setzen. Es muss aber gar nicht immer Hochglanz sein, zumal die ja schon kratzeranfällig sind. Haustiere? Kinder? Ich würde eine einfache weiße Front wählen, melaminharzbeschichtet (ist auch günstiger) und dann die Fliesen als Knaller dazu!

I like the blue, too. With plenty of white in your kitchen, including your white backsplash, there really isn't too much blue.

I would probably go with black cabinetry hardware though. The room could be quite "chilly" with stainless cabinet hardware.

Too Blue for my taste. I did the same thing for my daughter's room, too strong of a blue after I did a test on the wall. Figured it was the cheapest thing I could do, change the paint color. I read the Houzz article from last year and the quote I liked best regarding paint color was "if you can answer the question of 'What color is that?' in one word, then you have the wrong paint color." Better to say ...is it blue, is it silver, is it green???? I have found Restoration Hardware paint colors are the safest to choose from......subtle rich colors.

Once you get the stainless appliances in they will ground the blue color- so it is just not so "there"

If you want to soften it, I used a Ralph Lauren glaze over blue and love it. Pretty easy to do and ties in the white. http://www.ralphlaurenpaint.com/faux_techniques/indigo_denim

My kitchen is about the same blue color and I love it. I have white cabinets, white appliances and counters are a taupe quartz that match the color of the wood flooring. My accent colors are yellow with a few accessories in various shades of blue. All of this spills into the breakfast nook. I get tons of light and made cornices above the windows covered in fabric that is yellow and shades of blue.

I went with a similar blue for my open floor plan ...decided the space really needed a pop of color since I have a tendency to go with neutrals. Glad I had the nerve to do it...

I would like to paint my kitchen a Blue Grey. Flows into living room so would have to continue on at least one wall.
I have oak colored cabinets and white appliances. This is a rental apartment.
Does that sound good to you?
It has a high ceiling.

I would never recommend anyone to buy stainless steel appliances. I am sorry but they are high maintenance when to keep them look clean. Terrible.

Hello, I was wondering if you were considering new countertops or back splash? You could soften or make it less stark by adding another complimentary shade of blue or a beige composed with blue streaks or glass chips. Just a thought.

I'm with the others who say if you don't like it now, it won't grow on you later. Get something you love now because it will be a quick fix. Otherwise, it's going to be 6 years before you get around to changing it.

I think that once you see the stainless steel next to it, it will feel better. It co-ordinates well with the tan you already have.

The blue isn't too much, especially when you get your doors on the cabinets.
The lighting needs to be addressed if you can. 4" recessed, strategically place, will provide a more complete overall lighting. My concern, as I view your picture, is the range with no protection under the cabinets. I hope that the paint you are using is flame retardant because it will surely blister from the heat from the burners.

I like the blue. Also, a side note about color : when staging a home for sale, we were told to avoid anything but neutrals. After much discussion, we impulsively painted a wall in a dated and blah kitchen a lovely shade of green, painted the cabinets white, changed out the hardware, and updated a light fixture in the breakfast nook. The home sold in 2 weeks after languishing before then. People loved that green color, just wish I could remember what it was. It was bright and cheery.

Once you get your stainless steel,you'll either love,the combo with your blue walls or decide to change the color. All things considered, paint is a relatively easy thing to change.

About high maintenance and stainless steel - I love our stainless and just use microfiber cloths to wipe p down the stainless and dry it. Microfiber is the key for me ( anyone use something better? ) Most days, I have to touch up the few areas with fingerprints on them but the redt stays clean and shiny.

Without microfiber, yes.,,it,would be a pain to clean.

I agree with Tammy Lawhorn. The wall you have your microwave against needs to be painted the same color as your kitchen... One of the reasons you're not loving the blue is because the beige/tan walls in the adjoining room are too muddy looking next to the clean blue and white combination in your kitchen. The two rooms need a cohesive look, and right now they don't have that at all. Embrace the beautiful blue color you've selected, and get rid of the beige. I think you'll love it when you do.

It's a great colour. However, I would not emphasize the crown and door trim and the white cabinets - it's too much visual 'noise'.
What if you painted the crown and door casings the same blue inside the room? Then the blue wall and cabinets will be the only focal points in the room?

Also, I can't really tell if the ceiling is white.... it would be nice if it had a very small % of the same blue - like 10% blue added to the white, for the ceiling only - What do you think?

The blue looks good. Consider painting the microwave cart white and the inside walls of the built in shelf unit blue but leave the shelves themselves white. Your kitchen will appear larger and the shelves will provide interest from the horizontal lines provided by the white. If you don't plan on painting the dining wall then a large piece of artwork with blues will gel the two rooms. If you want to paint the dining wall but are cautious of the blue from the kitchen choose a lighter shade than what is in the kitchen. if you have a color card for the blue you have choose a lighter color on that card. that way you are sure to get a color that will compliment the kitchen blue. good luck!

I think the blue is great and will look even better when the whole space is painted blue. If you find the blue to be too much at first, I always find that adding large pieces of artwork help break up the wall colour. Creating a focal point other than the blue wall will help take your attention away from the blue and to something else, like the artwork or a statement light over your table. I would also add a secondary colour as an accent, like a yellow, or if you prefer a less intense look, a light green.

Josie, are you planning to paint the peninsula seen in your first photo (with husband)?

It may be on your list, hope so! Under the white countertops, the tan does nothing to frame your kitchen attractively.

As a bonus, I think painting the peninsula wall blue would be the perfect balance across from the microwave wall you will be doing.

I was thrilled when a lighting designer came to help me with my kitchen/great room and she said that blue would be a great color for the space. I love my blue kitchen, it makes me smile! I also have white cabinets and an old oak Hoosier cabinet and love the combination!

don't be afraid of color. It's the least expensive way to refresh a space and can completely transform how an area looks and feels. This is a fabulous color--looks very much like the Sherwin Williams "Adrift"" I used in a client's kitchen leading into living room recently and it's amazing. Give it a week or 2 and it won't seem nearly as radical as you fear

If you still feel it's too blue when you're done, you could extend the dining room color into the kitchen through stenciling.

Overalls are perfect for painting. Nice blue but personally dont see why all the walls would be blue...have u considered a back splash and may be accent walls. When I have second thoughts painting I usually end up not liking it...
