Grey couch disaster

Help! I just purchased a custom sectional which looks more grey/blue than I was hoping. My walls are "greige" and I have an open floor plan with other brown/beige accents so the couch looks awful! My question is-- what color rug should I put under the couch to tie it in with the other area so as to not highlight the blue in the couch? Anything else I can do to tie the couch in to the rest of the room because I can't return it? Please note, the rug under the couch and the ottoman in these photos will be replaced-- I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!

Maybe it's just the lighting, but I don't think it looks awful. Why are you getting rid of the rug? It appears to tie to the couch/ottoman very well. I'm not seeing a huge contrast with beige, but again it's probably just the pictures.

I like the idea of a red rug with the other colors that are in the sofa and wall. Red will also give you a nice pop of color!

Hallo zusammen , was für eine schöner Exkurs in die deutsche Seele . Da ich ja gerne zu Verallgemeinerungen neige , ist für mich der Ordnungssinn , auch schon mal der Ordnungswahn und die Uniformierung typisch deutsch . Das spiegelt sich vielfach in Hausfassaden , Gärtenanlagen und sogar in der Farbwahl der Autolackierung wieder . Hier ist silber, weiß und grau das neue Bunt der Deutschen . Bei den Hausfassenden sind es immer noch , zum Glück mit abnehmender Tendenz die Klinkerfassaden. Wenn man sich Fassaden von 1870 bis 1930 ,die aus echten Ziegelsteinen erbaut sind anschaut , kann man nicht verstehen wie es zur Entwicklung dieses Ziegelfakes kommen konnte , muss wohl eine Massenkonditionierung sein . Dasselbe passiert gerade bei den im "Bauhausstil" so hippen Gebäuden , die ich zugegebenermassen fast immer sehr gelungen finde . Da findet allerdings schon wieder eine Uniformierung statt , oder gibt es auch Fenster oder Türen die nicht Antrazith sind ? Bei der Ordnung und Plegeleichtigkeit im Garten , kommt auch die uns in die Gene gelegte Technikaffinität zur Geltung . Rasenroboter , Unkrautfolie , Freischneider , Laubbläser, Hächsler und Pflanzen die möglichst immer zu jeder Jahreszeit gleich aussehen , wie z.B. Bux und , oh Graus, die Wiederentdeckung von Koniferen und Cotoneaster . Was aber bei uns auch typisch ist , sind die Strömungen , die es anders machen wollen . Hallo, ich schaue viel bei Coastal Living. Dort gibt es auch immer gute Anregungen. Dein Blau ist schon ziemlich lebendig und Dein Raum muss dann auch sicherlich 40 qm mindestens haben ??? Hier einmal 2 links mit Ideen, vielleicht findest du ein paar Anregungen.... Vileleicht würde ich tiefens dunkles Blau dazumischen und Koralle, wie schon erwähnt. @barkley0410 ... das Bild hatte was. Schade ich dachte beim letzten Thread hätte ihr jemanden gefunden. Keine Schublade aber dafür Ablagen. Ich habe da noch weitere gefunden und in ein Ideenbuch gestell, "Tisch und Lampe", sonst scrollt man sich rund :)

Although it's good looking, your ottoman is the wrong size and more formal looking compared to the rest of the furniture in both rooms. Rectangular (or two small square) wood would be much better. The sofa and rug look great. Think your wall color will be as well once you introduce some art work behind the sofa to break it up. There are some great fabrics for pillows and window treatments available to compliment it all. Check your fabric store. Repeat your color pop.

Thanks everyone for the awesome suggestions. I would love to paint but unfortunately it's not in the budget right now-- the house is very open which means it would be a huge job and I could buy several new couches for the cost we were quoted to repaint (it's a brand new house).

As for artwork over the couch-- the ceiling is vaulted and the wall is about 15ft. over the couch. What should I put on this massive wall that won't get drowned out and is also affordable???

I think this existing grey rug looks a bit small for this couch to be honest. Any thoughts on what this vintage Persian 9x12 would look like with it?

Geez, don't put the sectional on a red rug because it will simply highlight the blue in the grey fabric. The suggestions about finding a rug that has both greige and grey together seems like the way to bridge the color gap.

If you use the blue/grey and greige each

at least three times in the room, then bring in some brighters colors like red, gold and cadet blue, you will pull it all together.

It's a compromise, not a long term solution, this is why paint should come last in room schemes. Bev, your greys are not as blue as her couch is showing on my screen.

No Tribbletrouble, I was trying to find a grey that would not reinforce the blue in her gray. She has a very cool sophisticated color story for her home and I'm just really stunned by the posters that don't seem to be taking the rest of the home into consideration as they make suggestions.

Perhaps there are some rugs with your colours plus the blue/grey? Because its big and cant be ignored. My concern is the purchases should not total more than the cost of repainting the room the couch is in, as it should be done.

Beverly, I was initially thinking of a rug in this color scheme as well but it is in fairly close proximity to the rug I have under the table which is an oatmeal grey and has a diamond pattern. Would choosing a rug with a pattern be competing with the one under the table? Also, I have a toddler and a newborn so I need to keep that in mind with my selection :)

I should add that it only looks blue from the one angle, which luckily is at one end of the room that people don't pass by.

Based on the photos, I'm not seeing a cohesive color story in the home yet, which is understandable, because the homeowner is in the process of settling in and redecorating a new home. Chans088 has expressed interest in a red rug, so I think it's ok to suggest new colors. And I personally feel that ignoring the blue/grey (instead of incorporating it) will only make it stick out like a sore thumb.

Barnett HD, the OP has the subtle color scheme of greige, white with a dark finish wood floor. That's the color scheme.

Checkout Greige Design blog at http://www.greigedesign.com/blogs/blog?page=5 for hundreds of pages of subtle, sophisticated color schemes which don't depend on that trite 'pop of color' that most posters on the forum are always suggesting.

Chans088, your dining rug, though patterned, is basically a solid. It of course has to be taken into consideration, but as long as the rugs play nice with one another, patterns are OK. The patterned rug you currently have works with the dining room rug
I'm not able to tell on my computer, but is the current rug, that terrible with the sofa and walls that is just has to go? Also don't discount rugs designated as indoor outdoor for your room. Some are quite plush.

Bev, based on your logic, interior designers should go the way of the dodo and stenographer. Of course a colour scheme can change.

Thanks Beverly for your comments. I am happy to learn that my chosen color palette is considered "sophisticated" :) The rug is not that terrible but there is something about it that just doesn't look right to my untrained eye. Also, I do think it looks dwarfed by the massive couch so I am looking for something larger. The front legs of the couch are just barely on the rug. The room is about 14' wide and the rug is currently 7'9" x 10'.

I love your room and your sofa!

But because the sofa is blue and the walls are grey and the rug is blue and grey it looks like the colors are balancing each other out.....I think you need more blue to make the grey less or more grey to make the blue less in the room....in other words create an imbalance between the blue and grey. One color needs to be dominant, when you do that it will be a better cohesiveness in the room. Then decide on an accent color or two that makes a strong contrast to the grey and blue....if it looks better you might decide to paint the room to a grey or blue or white cast. Just an opinion.

What if you put the grey living room rug in the dining area and get a large sisal rug for the living room. This will spread the blue/grey colour as well as the beige/tan colour around the whole area. Replace the ottoman with a coffee table and pick up color with art on the walls.

I found a couple of photos that showed cooler grey sofas with Greige walls. Both incorporate some warm gold accents to warm up the cool grey. I think some dark grey and goldenrod pillows like in the first photo would look on your sofa.

I continue to suggest you DO NOT try to match; you try to blend the colors you have now by adding another color...in a larger amount...into the room. You can't paint, so you other "wall" is your floor.

See what BM suggests with your colors: red.

Apparently this was the colour that was used on the walls. Ironically, BM states that it goes well with silvery grey. hmmm.

I think that's a nice sophisticated palette with the deep caviar. To me it's a purple with a lot of black in it that keeps it from being too feminine. Do you like it? Maybe a rug, pillows and accents that have a purple undertone would tie it all together.

Have you tried just removing the rug for a few days to help decide what you might need? Gold/brass accents and a bold colored ottoman may just do with your current rug.

So, I think you have excellent taste in rugs and furniture, and are merely suffering from "there is an enormous sectional in my room and I am not used to it" I am stuck home with the dog today, because he just started a new med "that might cause nausea", so I played with my very similar set up for you.
#1 there is an enormous sectional in my home...
#2 oh, look, accessories really make a difference
#3 & 4 how everyone really lives...dog, neon dog toy, electronics, woobies for snuggling!

The Ikat rug she posted would look beautiful and sophisticated...it will bring the walls and sofa together and soften the blue you are seeing...I would add neutral pillows with texture that are the same tone as the walls..it is a wonderful combination!

I also think that textured gold-ish pillows or throws in combination with some that include gray and beige and the tones of the rug would tie everything together...hate to see that rug go..

I had this same issue! I ordered a sofa from Ethan Allen which looked to be dark grey but when it was delivered it looked blue/grey. It's the lighting in your home. I bought a dark rug (because I have a dog) from there as well and when it was delivered I put it in the room with the blue/grey sofa and guess what, it no longer looks blue/grey. It looks like the dark grey couch I wanted. I have no idea how this is possible. Lighting is everything!

We have jute rugs and I love them! Neutral enough to match with everything and it's textured so it doesn't fall flat.

Calm down! You are suffering from shock due do the huge change to your room. Give this time and all such feelings will pass. Your rug currently may not be large enough but don't go out & buy anything until your eyes have adjusted to this change.

If you do buy another rug I would stay with a similar style as you have as it goes very well with the sofa. Drape a throw over the ottoman to tie all the colors together. Your sofa is lovely. Enjoy.

Hi everyone. I just wanted to say thank you for all of your advice and to post an update. Although I still need to find new accent pillows and do a large-scale gallery wall behind the couch, I am quite happy with how the rug looks and ties in all my different neutrals. Better still, it is baby-approved.
