Ideas on opening up Kitchen

My wife and I are purchasing our first home, and it is definitely in need of some updates. I'm not experienced in remodeling, and would love some advice from the folks here on Houzz that are more knowledgable than I am!
One of the first things we are hoping to tackle is a kitchen remodel. I would like to see if there is a good way to open up the kitchen more by taking out a large closet/walls that separate the kitchen from the family room.

I'm wondering about the feasibility of knocking out that big closet next to the kitchen, and moving the refrigerator to the other side of the kitchen on the left side of the sink. If the entire wall behind the refrigerator is removed, maybe we can extend the countertops through where the refrigerator is currently and have a nice open view in to the living room.
I'd love to hear from more experienced people about whether this sounds like it could work, or whether it would be worth doing (in terms of potential cost/value added to the house).

Congrats on your new home! Do you know if the walls are load bearing? I would get an engineer involved before anything else, to determine what you are working with. It also looks like you have the HVAC return in that wall, which would need to be rerouted (and not rerouted to kitchen location).

Congratulations on the new house. It is hard to tell over the internet whether and how many load bearing walls are impacted (and what is in the walls). That will significantly impact costs. If it were me, I would live there 6 months before starting any large remodel projects. You get better ideas about what you really want to change after you live in the space for awhile.

Hi Ella, wow, that looks like a real challenge... The really low "Kniestock" together with your size doesn´t work well. I think you need to move the kitchen pretty far into the room to be able to properly move around and operate the kitchen. For instance if you imagine standing in front of the sink - if i read the floorplan correctly, if you move just a little bit to the right, you´ll bump your head into the angled wall. In addition, the whole area below the angled wall is actually not usable for a worktop area, because it´s just too low. Even if you place storage room there, it´s not really comfortable to reach. Can you add some more picture of the rest of the room? I think you need a complete layout including dining area and living room area and not only focus on the kitchen. Cheers, TH

Dear Maxime, your discription of floor sounds like the german called "Steinholz" floor. It is possible for more details in picture. If its an historic Steinholz Estrich, you can restore with less effort. I am a specialist for these tecnology. For your Project: The gap between the floors your can level with new mixed Steinholz/LEOSTEEN- Estrich with extrakt Lineoleum cover. Your project is in Berlin ? Visit on site is possible. Hi Ella, first of all, let me say that you have some really nice vintage pieces in your home! If you are planning to keep the light grey rug I would go with a darker shade of grey for the daybed and a lighter shade or a completely different color for the fabric of the sidechair (e.g. like the dark blue in your third photo) in order to create more contrast and give the room a more dynamic feel. You also mentioned a portrait to be hung above the sideboard - maybe the colors of this picture can aslo inspire the fabrics, it's always nice if the same color pops up in different details of a room. Since you are not allowed to paint the ceiling, it should be the only wooden surface in the room. The floor can be covered by either wall-to-wall carpet or a large rug, but please check if a door that opens into the room will still be operable. Multi-use and visually light furniture is important in such a tight space. I would replace the bunk bed (you're too grown-up anyway) with a nice sleeper sofa like, for instance, Flottebo. And I'd buy a comfy chair that can be used for reading and as a desk chair. It should be unobtrusive and easy to move like this feminine rattan chair. If you don't need a desk on a daily basis, I'd recommend a height-adjustable notebook table (on casters) that can double as a side table next to the sofa/ bed. Again, multi-use is the key. Once you've chosen new furniture, you can decide on curtains, rug/ carpet and other decorative elements. Wall colors are usually the last decision because you can have millions of hues individually mixed. Also consider how much natural light your room gets.

I would definitely remove the closet and wall between the kitchen/living room. However, if you place the fridge on the left side of the sink it becomes very visible from the living room. I would move the range (to the left of the window) and put a more decorative hood above (as a nicer focal point or feature) and move the sink into an island increasing your prep space. Fridge would then move into the corner along the space wall where the range is currently (or put a pantry beside then fridge). The room has good size but poor layout cramming the range and fridge in that small corner. Before removing any walls you certainly need to make sure there in not a load-bearing factor. Hope that helps!

Thanks for all the great comments! @CLC, the unit on the wall there is actually just an electric wall heating unit, so thankfully this project wouldn't involve re-routing the HVAC return. I definitely need to determine if there are load-bearing walls impacted there. @smit2380, that's great advice about living in the house for a while before taking on any major remodels. @Detail by Design: Thanks for the awesome insight!
