Designer's TouchIn this project. All the pre-existing woodwork (doors, trims, baseboards and bookcases) were taken down carefully and reassembled in order to maintain the old Cambridge house beauty. The owners did not like the idea of a TV dominating a space; of it being a focal point in a living room. So therefore we designed the sliding panel which displays one of their special paintings when the TV is not use.
In an open concept living space, one challenge is creating a sense of separate rooms with different functions but with an overall “feel” of it being one. I believe we achieved that. The gold tones dining room chandelier and the teal wallpaper in the dining room, which is such a rich, inviting color, distinguishes that room from the kitchen but complements it, and then the teal chairs in the living room carry that color theme there.

The Scalamandre wallpaper brought in a tone of life to the room and we picked up on those colors with the new gold drapes with accent trimming and oriental rug and recovered the chairs. We added in wall sconces, previously not there.

Gail Green InteriorsThe strong formal axis set up by this portal demands an appropriately dramatic termination of the visit it created. This is accomplished by a clever alteration of the window end of the dining room. A new space with a strong focal point is now created for balance. An irregular space with two asymmetrical windows and one splayed wall is transforming by adding another splayed wall to match the exiting one. A new door to the powder room in this wall mirrors an existing recess in the existing spayed wall to create a symmetrical effect. This simple action makes the minuscule powder room much larger, creating a sense of false perspective to increase the apparent size of the dining room and places a single window on axis with the foyer. This window is given an appropriately grand window treatments with traditional swags framing a diaphanous sheer. This shear conveys the same softness as the sandblasted glass panels at the opposite end of the room, yet provided a transitional counterpoint to their modernity.
