While most every home has and needs rain gutters, they too can catch flying embers and hold them at the base of the roof. Here, we've addressed that vulnerability by placing a fine mesh over the top of all gutters, preventing the collection of both embers and leaf liter. From this view, it is possible to see that the elevation of the ember-catching trees protects the elevated deck side of the home. Photo: Lesly Hall Photography

Wrapped in lush oak and pine tree canopy, the home feels as if it could be located deep in the mountains. Palm trees, sentimental for the owners, are kept free of any dry material for fire safety.

This beautiful, optimally sustainable contemporary home sits on the steep slope of LA's storied Mandeville Canyon. Because flying embers pose the greatest fire danger to homes, we look first to the fire vulnerabilities of a home then create relevant protective elements in the landscape. While no plant is fire proof, some native foliage is particularly adept at resisting fire. Dwarf Coyote Bush is a California native with protective qualities. It maintains hydration year round with very little supplemental water. This hydration helps it resist fire, which can give space and time to fire fighters. It also roots deeply to protect slopes. It is so good at this job, it will continue doing it even if all above-ground foliage burns to the ground. Photo: Lesly Hall Photography
