Who: Sean Aichel of Regal Construction & Remodeling
Where: Tarzana, California
In his own words: “The remodeling business is an ever-evolving industry, with so many innovative ideas that are constantly changing. Homeowners face the challenge of choosing a timeless design and style that will look great for years to come.”
When you start a remodeling project, focusing on the latest design trends might make sense now — but what about years from now? “Given the amount of money spent on a kitchen remodel, homeowners may want to consider one with a timeless design so there will be no need for another major remodel,” says Sean Aichel, the owner of Regal Construction & Remodeling in Tarzana. “It’s much more cost-effective in the long run, and homeowners won’t have to worry about resale value if trends change.”

Client collaboration. Aichel starts with a meeting at the jobsite to inspect the condition of the area and inform the homeowner of any concerns that need to be addressed, such as layout issues or how major appliances will factor into the overall design.
“The best part is when the contractor is out there; a collaboration of ideas is important between client and contractor,” Aichel says. “People have a lot of questions, and the contractor is spending time getting into a lot of different things. Every customer and every style are different.”

Communication is key. Once an estimate and design are in place, Aichel’s office manager becomes the liaison between client and contractor. Aichel believes this gives clients the breathing room they need to have an honest discussion about the pricing and timeline. “Our goal is to form a trusting relationship by being honest and transparent with our potential clients,” he says. “Many contractors focus on selling more than actually completing a quality project.”

1. Go With White
The key to a classic kitchen is white cabinets, Aichel says: “They are like that timeless piece of clothing you need in your wardrobe. Whether traditional or contemporary, they can be played up to be any style your heart desires and never go out of style.” In this home in Sierra Madre, Aichel worked with the clients to remodel their existing kitchen. The result is a design anchored by white cabinets that won’t go out of style.

2. Build From Your Base
White cabinets can act as your canvas, Aichel says; they allow you to choose patterned countertops, floor tile or backsplashes without the overall look’s being overwhelming. “Using different items that are easier to change allows you to add pops of color, funky lighting elements or colorful backsplashes that can be replaced when your current style starts feeling tired and out-of-date,” he says.
“This Pomona client was thrilled to be able to go all-out on her kitchen,” Aichel says. Her preferences included black countertops and red backsplashes, a bold look that might not have worked if the cabinets hadn’t been white.

3. Design for Function
A timeless design isn’t just about the look of a space; it’s also about functionality. “How we store things and make the best use of our space has really changed over the years,” Aichel says. His recommendation: “Sit down with a cabinet designer, see what new storage options are available and decide what works best for your space.”
The owners of this Studio City home wanted a sleek design where everything was hidden to create a clean look. By choosing shelving units and appliances that fit their layout and storage needs, they were able to use the space creatively.

We put in good quality, natural cherry cabinets with tons of pull-out type storage, grayish blue granite, a 9 foot island, and a one-inch cobbled stone backsplash 18 years ago. The cabinets still look great, have held up well and the kitchen could still be in a magazine. We can't believe it's been that long! Definitely invest in good quality.
