“We just completed construction on our new home in the White Bear Lake, MN area. We had been looking for a tear down opportunity on a nearby lake for a couple years, and when a property presented itself, we quickly sprung into action. We have identified our builders in advance (Sustainable9) and based on our vision for the home, they introduced us to Unfold Architecture. Their previous projects, both out West and here in MN, fit the mountain modern/Minnesota modern style we were seeking. From the get go, the team at Unfold were amazing partners. Through conversations and inspiration photos we shared on Houzz, they took our long wish list (maximized lake views, lower level walkout, modern but welcoming, mid-century influences) and designed the perfect house. Their houses are striking architecturally but also extremely livable and functional. They use state of the art CAD models to help you envision what the home would look like. It’s remarkable how close the house turned out in respect to the early renderings. And throughout the process, they were collaborative partners, incorporating feedback from both us and our builders, presenting us initially with several options and then honing in on our chosen design. We could not be more pleased with the process (even in the midst of Covid challenges) or the end result, which is truly the dream home we envisioned.”

“Alethea is amazing! She was an integral part of the team when we remodeled our entire basement, renovated our kitchen and added a large porch in the front of our home. She was the key person to help select all of the interior selections and after the work was completed, assisted in the interior furnishings as well. We did a second project with her as well. We added a laundry room that is the envy of my neighborhood. She designed and drew up all of the plans and worked well with all of the subs. Many friends have seen her work in my home and have hired her as well- both to help in structural changes as well as interior work. They all have been happy. I cannot recommend her highly enough. He drew up a design to finish out some required work on the cape for stairs and cabinets. “Jean Rehkamp Larson is talented, patient, articulate, creative, brilliant, practical, systematic and delightful. We live in a 1908 Farmhouse in Minnesota, which we purchased 14 years ago. We made very few improvements during those years. Our 3 kids were in school and then starting college and life was too busy. I knew we eventually would get to updating and remodeling our home so I kept looking for possible architects. Jean wrote the book "Farmhouse Book". I immediately realized that she understood the elements that I wanted to preserve and maintain, yet update to make more livable and comfortable for our expanding family, as kids come home with partners and maybe eventually grandchildren. This project is 2+ years in the works mainly because of unforeseen surprises behind the walls i.e. lead pipes, extension cords in the wall used for electricity, porch walls that were structurally unsound and could not pass inspection as well as the increased expenses because of those surprises that required refinancing and prioritizing. As well as decision making difficulties between 2 very stubborn people. :) We are coming into our final push to finish the kitchen, cabinets and trim work. We have remodeled the upstairs bathroom, we have moved the kitchen back to its original location from its 1970s tacky remodel to incorporate a bathroom on the main floor, Put in a main floor handicap accessible bathroom, wrap around porch, new entryway, sunroom off the kitchen, geothermal heating and cooling.”
