Need help with living space

My fiance and I just purchased an older remodeled house which has a pretty small living space. I'm trying to imagine the best configuration for placing a good sized couch and TV/entertainment center without blocking a window. The attached pictures are from the listing, so please ignore the poorly done venetian plaster "raw meat" walls... We're painting those. (As a side, any suggestions? We like the idea of venetian plaster, but this guy just chose the wrong color or something. Should we simply paint over that or do we need to do something different)

I actually can't really imagine a different configuration than the way the last owner had it, which may actually be the best for space. It may be that we end up making this the formal dining or something and end up using the space where the dining table currently is as the living area as it might be a little more conducive for a TV.

We're not sure. Any suggestions??

Maybe you can rethink the use of the rooms. Without seeing all of the rooms would your living room or dining room make a better entertainment room?

The present living room is off the front hall? Because of the front to back layout of the room, I could see that as a dining room, with a beautiful chandelier, long panels on the windows, and a new paint color. The only downside to this arrangement is if it is a trip from the kitchen.

The family room (and I call them that when a t v is part of the decor) would be fine in the back room.

I wish I could determine the placement of the fans, as I would like to see two chandeliers lined up. It also looks like they are not in the center of the room, which will be important especially where you place your dining table.

One more observation from the pixs, I suggest removing the chair rail or at least painting it the same color you chose for your walls as it is a very distracting line going from room to room.

Nice purchase. Good luck with the pink/coral.

I think the lamp above the table is too big and hides part of the picture behind, which is a very nice one. I would prefer a more technical lamp, maybe a rail with some spotlights, possibly suspended. A carpet is a good idea, but I would definitly not put it under the table, because then even more objects would be cluttered in only one half of the room, the carpet should instead lie on the left half of the room in front of the table, so that it is not covered with furniture. It should pick up the style of the picture on the wall. My first idea would be a carpet I own myself, it fits quite nice to the picture: Ligne Roset - Menhir And I would prefer a white dining table, because the colour of the chairs would make a better contrast, the dark wood of table and floor is quite heavy.

Hi yoursra dodo, a lot of children love yellow. Yellow with a red pigment makes a room friendly and cosy. And when it is dark, rainy and grey outside, yellow cheers you up. if you select the colour, hold the sample next to the door, the floor and the blue "sky" above the bed. Look at it in dayligth (sunny and cloudy) and in the night with electric lighting.

Hallo Yvonne, das Wohnzimmer hat durch die Öffnung zu dem kleinen Raum planoben (ehemals Esszimmer?) leider den Charakter eines Durchgangszimmers. Die Sitzgruppe würde also - egal wie gestellt - immer auf einer „Straße“ stehen. Ich vermute, dass dieses Zimmer eine eher untergeordnete Funktion hat, kann das aber nicht ganz ersehen. Ich kann mir auch nicht vorstellen, dass Sie zu Gästen sagen „Kommt, wir gehen in‘s Wohnzimmer“ und dann mit allen durch den kleinen Raum, am WC vorbei, hineingehen, da der gegenüberliegende Teil mit der Küche viel größer und einladender ist. Aber was ich jetzt anregen möchte, ist ein wenig spekulativ, da ich Ihr Gesamtkonzept nicht kenne und nicht weiß, wie Sie leben. Können Sie den Durchgang zu diesem Zimmer schließen? Dan wäre eine Platzierung der Sofas ganz klassisch über Eck möglich, mit der Blickrichtung Fenster-Küche. So sitzt man gerne: geschützt von hinten durch die Wand und mit dem Blick auf den Bereich, wo jemand hineinkommen kann. Zudem ist es einladend, wenn man einen Wohnraum betritt und in eine Sitzgruppe hineinschaut, statt seitlich auf ein Möbel. Der kleine Raum könnte dann ein großzügiger Garderobenbereich werden (von dort geht auch das Gäste-WC ab) und das Entree hätte keinen Kleiderschrank in Nische, sondern ein dekoratives Sideboard, eine Fläche für Kunst oder eine tolle Wand-Licht-Gestaltung. Hello Heidrun, (I will write in English since it is my native language - so I hope it translates well for you 😊) I love the comments from the community so far about incorporating textiles - so many valid points about sound absorption! Have you considered a machine-washable area rug? Due to the practicality, this can be an excellent option for having little ones in the house without sacrificing colour. I recommend a light area rug for the living room to break up the visual weight of the dark floors. To add some personality to the space, I recommend considering furnishings that bring in colour - specifically in sage or blue tones. If, for instance, your sofa or dining chairs are sage or blue, your eyes would be drawn to the pop of colour instead of the dark floors. The walls would instantly feel less bare and act more as a complementary backdrop to the furnishings whilst keeping the space feeling open and airy. Your silver-grey USM shelving would also fit very well with coloured furnishings because it would stand out instead of blending in. For lighting 💡- don't be afraid to add a statement flush-mount lighting fixture in the living room to complete the space. Choosing a light fixture that softly directs light up toward the ceiling will add a warm and spacious feel to the room. And lastly: Consider adding colour to the kitchen to make it feel more warm and inviting. Some budget-friendly options would be to add a backsplash or paint the walls in the kitchen, which would help define this space and bring in personality. Another idea to consider is to paint the kitchen cabinetry. Adding in some form of colour in the kitchen will help bring in the warmth you are missing and develop a sense of dimension so that it doesn't look so "flat". No matter what arrangement you choose you should float the furniture and define the area with an area rug. I put together a mock up to show you one idea, which is to have two sofas facing each other and you may be able to add a chair to the arrangement. I'd suggest wall mount your flat screen on an articulating arm. It will keep it out of the way and give you flexibility for viewing. The TV equipment and/or accessories can then go into a small cabinet or chest fit for your style of furnishings. I wouldn't use anything label "entertainment unit". Hope this helps!

OMG, faux painting is so out. Paint. A soft great remove wood. Paint the whole area same. Add panels to windows. Use a print, with wall color in them.

Thanks for the replies.

The more I think about it, the less I like the current dining as a "family room". I think it's a little too narrow to accommodate more than a couple people watching TV comfortably.

I've attached more pictures of the foyer/entry way which was hard to judge the size in the last set of pictures. The entry way we were just planning on placing a simple entry table, although I find this hard to justify as these are basically never used and it just another thing to dust. Maybe someone has another suggestion? If you notice the bottom of the stairs off the foyer. I was thinking this should probably be opened up so you can actually see the stairs and make the entry look larger. I'm not entirely sure why the previous owner did this.
