Living Room Update Ideas?
I've been trying to update my living room for the past few months (not over the holidays). I bought new furniture, white and gray, I painted the walls from beige to gray with and smoky blue around the windows, and I'm trying to accent in cobalt/navy blues. The room doesn't look finished to me. I would love to get some ideas and suggestions. Excuse the pups on their perch!

What colour/fabric for soft furnishings
Kommentare (19)Hi Ella, first of all, let me say that you have some really nice vintage pieces in your home! If you are planning to keep the light grey rug I would go with a darker shade of grey for the daybed and a lighter shade or a completely different color for the fabric of the sidechair (e.g. like the dark blue in your third photo) in order to create more contrast and give the room a more dynamic feel. You also mentioned a portrait to be hung above the sideboard - maybe the colors of this picture can aslo inspire the fabrics, it's always nice if the same color pops up in different details of a room. I am thinking about new kitchen with island. I will appreciate for kitchen arrangement. As well we are planning to add additional toilette in bathroom, I want to add some more space and shift the living room entrance to kitchen direction. As well I am missing a cloth closet at entrance and no place to add it. I am attaching my plan for kitchen, living room and the dining room, but want to add some storage in kitchen. Kommentare (8)Hallo Yvonne, das Wohnzimmer hat durch die Öffnung zu dem kleinen Raum planoben (ehemals Esszimmer?) leider den Charakter eines Durchgangszimmers. Die Sitzgruppe würde also - egal wie gestellt - immer auf einer „Straße“ stehen. Ich vermute, dass dieses Zimmer eine eher untergeordnete Funktion hat, kann das aber nicht ganz ersehen. Ich kann mir auch nicht vorstellen, dass Sie zu Gästen sagen „Kommt, wir gehen in‘s Wohnzimmer“ und dann mit allen durch den kleinen Raum, am WC vorbei, hineingehen, da der gegenüberliegende Teil mit der Küche viel größer und einladender ist. Aber was ich jetzt anregen möchte, ist ein wenig spekulativ, da ich Ihr Gesamtkonzept nicht kenne und nicht weiß, wie Sie leben. Können Sie den Durchgang zu diesem Zimmer schließen? Dan wäre eine Platzierung der Sofas ganz klassisch über Eck möglich, mit der Blickrichtung Fenster-Küche. So sitzt man gerne: geschützt von hinten durch die Wand und mit dem Blick auf den Bereich, wo jemand hineinkommen kann. Zudem ist es einladend, wenn man einen Wohnraum betritt und in eine Sitzgruppe hineinschaut, statt seitlich auf ein Möbel. Der kleine Raum könnte dann ein großzügiger Garderobenbereich werden (von dort geht auch das Gäste-WC ab) und das Entree hätte keinen Kleiderschrank in Nische, sondern ein dekoratives Sideboard, eine Fläche für Kunst oder eine tolle Wand-Licht-Gestaltung. Have you considered a machine-washable area rug? Due to the practicality, this can be an excellent option for having little ones in the house without sacrificing colour. I recommend a light area rug for the living room to break up the visual weight of the dark floors. To add some personality to the space, I recommend considering furnishings that bring in colour - specifically in sage or blue tones. If, for instance, your sofa or dining chairs are sage or blue, your eyes would be drawn to the pop of colour instead of the dark floors. The walls would instantly feel less bare and act more as a complementary backdrop to the furnishings whilst keeping the space feeling open and airy. Your silver-grey USM shelving would also fit very well with coloured furnishings because it would stand out instead of blending in. For lighting 💡- don't be afraid to add a statement flush-mount lighting fixture in the living room to complete the space. Choosing a light fixture that softly directs light up toward the ceiling will add a warm and spacious feel to the room. And lastly: Consider adding colour to the kitchen to make it feel more warm and inviting. Some budget-friendly options would be to add a backsplash or paint the walls in the kitchen, which would help define this space and bring in personality. Another idea to consider is to paint the kitchen cabinetry. Adding in some form of colour in the kitchen will help bring in the warmth you are missing and develop a sense of dimension so that it doesn't look so "flat". I actually like your gray wall color with your wood trim, however the accent wall painted the same consistent color throughout your space would make those beautiful windows and angles of your space pop and be a focal point. Agree, no window treatments unless privacy is a concern. Height and contrast in coffee table would balance the space. You have selected nice furnishings but just need some tweaking. The rug is not placed symetrical as arrows pointing to the areas of correcting the placement. Black dark coffee table for contrast and simple lines. I think you have a table behind your sofa? Lamps possibly could go there for height. Assumed you have floor outlets as lamps flanking sofa on tables. Floor lamp in corner behind chairs for height and visual interest for harmony without competing with stairs and window. Best of luck....

vor 6 JahrenI think you need to hang curtains first on the side windows from the ceiling; leave the window wall alone; it is beautiful. Then think about taking all your ART and start designing a gallery wall first on the floor that will go on the stair case wall all the way down to the ground floor. Start at the top over the console table and use what you have and then over the next year as you collect art add to it and let it expand as you like it. Then be brave and leave all the other walls brave and let their bareness be the design element...you have made some really lovely choices I think! Love it.
Random including the colors in the room and then some but 2/3 BIG and 1/3 smaller. Keep pics about 3-5 inches apart I think, but play with it.

Why not try one of your art pieces above the acrylic table since you said you already tried the mirror and it didn't work? The sailboat or white framed piece might work. It does look like a lot of the pieces hung around the room are a bit random, so you might want to take the other pieces down for now (the sailboat and mirror specifically). Perhaps try an arc lamp in the corner where the sailboat piece is currently? This might add great interest in that area. Also to connect the chairs to the rest of the room it might be nice to see some lumbar pillows with white and navy in them on the chairs. We've included a few of our designs below to help guide you. Note how in the first photo we have an arc lamp, and pillows of various colors from the artwork we used on the sofa? In the second photo we used a great piece of artwork over a nice statement piece in a living room for one of our clients.
