Knock walls down or not?
Hi All,
My son and his fiancee are in the process of buying their first home together and have had an offer accepted. It's a bit of a renovation project, although the house was only built in around 2000. The kitchen needs to be ripped out and started again. They want to knock the kitchen through to make one room downstairs and upstairs plan to take out the fitted wardrobes and airing cupboard. The house currently has electric storage heaters. Their plan is to have a combi boiler in the kitchen so they will not need a cylinder upstairs. There is gas to the property.
So my question is whether anyone can suggest the best way to arrange the kitchen area, given it is so small? Is it a good idea to open it up (building regs?) or would it be optimal to keep at least some of the existing walls in place?
It's a mid terrace, so party walls will come into the equation of course.
They are on a tight budget, so extending to the back is out (at least for now). They want to get a dining table in as well as a breakfast bar.
If anyone has time on their hands and fancies playing around with this they will be most grateful. (And I really need to suggest they sign up to Houzz and ask their own questions!)

Kommentare (4)Dear Maxime, your discription of floor sounds like the german called "Steinholz" floor. It is possible for more details in picture. If its an historic Steinholz Estrich, you can restore with less effort. I am a specialist for these tecnology. Kommentare (53)Hallo alle zusammen - bin zum ersten Mal dabei obwohl ich schon oft bei houzz etwas nachgelesen habe... Ich renoviere gerade mit sehr viel Aufwandeine Altbauwohnung - mit Stuck, Flügeltüren, Parkett etc. Bisher habe ich immer F&B in meinen Wohnungen benutzt, obwohl mir letztes Jahr schon eine eigentlich überzeugte F&B Jüngerin Little Greene empfohlen hat. Der nette Laden, bei dem ich seit Jahren gekauft habe - und der by the way auch LG-Farben vertreibt, war fast entsetzt, als ich LG kaufen wollte... Haben mich so lange bequatscht, bis ich wieder F&B gekauft habe. Allerdings hielt sich meine Begeisterung in Grenzen, als alles fertig gestrichen war, was ich aber in erster Linie auf meine falsche Farbauswahl zurückführe. Die ganzen früher gewählten, kräftigen Farben wie Down Pipe, Welt und Oval Room Blue begeistern mich immer noch! Für meine neue Wohnung suche ich aber erstmal helle Töne. Ich finde man muss erst mal in den Räumen leben ehe man sehr kräftige Farbakzente setzt... Um alles noch komplizierter zu machen, empfahl mir gestern nun eine Freundin Ann von Mangoldt Farben... Was nun? Da eine ganze Wohnung gestrichen werden muss, ist der Preis auch nicht uninteressant! Ach so, da ich mir eine Küche schreinern lasse, muss auch hier eine Farbe gesucht werden... Kommentare (25)Hi Nicola, thank you so so much. Its just so nice. So pretty. The good thing is its not a mind bender. I was already thinking something on the lines. But the elements had to fit together. And now it looks they do. What I had not thought at all is the upholstery thing. It’s so nice. Even if I cannot do uphostry , I have gotten the idea now. I would somehow make the back of shelves and the heastbound side of bed same or coordinated, in order to make it kind of cozy niche corner as you have nicely put it. For shelves I was thinking to use a single piece or may a two pieces of 4x4 shelves like IKEA Kalax to creat a kind of partition of about 120 cm As I said I was thinking of similar things but as it comes from an expert I feel very happy. One more thing. For the colors would you recommend the ones I see already in the Sketsch??? Secondly, for the floor in the second / Upper room i was thinking of using small rugs in different colors witha kind of collage ( the pupose being easy maintainece, as a bigger carpet has to be send for professional carpet cleaners or need carpet cleaning machine). Small rugs if one is spoiled is easier to replace , which not easy in case of a bigger one that is wall to wall and heavy. Small rugs are easy to clean an rearrange. Of course under that I can add a light floor matt under these rugs to hold them together.( In both cases what colors , should be good. I mean if I add one piece carpet that would be almost half of the room, which colors should I take) or do you think it will make the rather smaller place look too busy and I should go for a full size carpet? vor 5 JahrenYou could fit two tall cabinets for a Pantry and FF in if you had both as left hand hinged - but if you want a DW and WM as well as an oven - it doesn’t leave that much room for actual cabinets !
