UrbafloriaThis California native plant front yard is Certified Ocean Friendly, Certified Wildlife Habitat, has been featured on the Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase. Salvia spathacea, or hummingbird sage lines either side of the path. There is also Salvia leucantha (purple), a small Persimmon tree and large Sycamore tree in this photo. Grape vine on porch has not leafed out yet. Rain chain instead of down spout is decorative and functional. This installation was partially funded by a turf removal rebate. --Jacky Surber

yardscapes Inc.This 2014 Luxury Home was part of Midwest Home's Tour. David Kopfmann of Yardscapes, was able to lend to the architecture of the home and create some very detailed touches with different styles of stone and plant material. This image is of the front entrance, where David used concrete pavers for the driveway and mortared stone pillars. Plant material was installed to create texture and color. Boulder outcroppings were also used to lend some interest and retaining along the walkway.

Hart Garden DesignFront gardens can often be a missed opportunity - with a bit of thought they can become places that welcome you home and provide valuable space for nature. In this Kenilworth garden, the old broken driveway was replaced with gravel to improve appearance and drainage. By removing a section of the lawn, a curved pathway to the front door was installed leaving space for a new planting bed. A water bowl has been added and a surrounding section of lawn is allowed to grow long in the summer months to further attract wildlife. The garden is now a very private space, filled with birds using the hedging to nest and shelter.
McKay Landscape LightingThe front of the house has a unique basement window well with landscaping. McKay Landscape Lighting designer Coleman says, "Adding mini light sconces on the wall helped improve security and enhance the aesthetics, so it's visually appealing as you look out the basement."
