Joanne Green Landscape & InteriorThis new contemporary home required a complementary sub-tropical garden, while maintaining complete practicality due to the horse stables, horse round yards, riding arena, chicken coup and aviary that was required for keeping many well-loved animals.
To achieve this, a number of challenges needed to be overcome, starting with the fact the location and exposed nature of the site meant the plantings needed to withstand some very harsh conditions, including extreme heat in summer and bitter frosts in winter, as well as prevailing winds.
To counter this, we added to the nature strip surrounding the property, increasing the planting to improve privacy and assisting in creating a wind breaks to the gardens – as well as providing a habitat for birds and native wild life.
The garden areas around the main driveway and entry pathways, pool surrounds and spaces around the house were filled with a mixture of hardy plants with a sub-tropical bent, such as
Frangipani’s, N.Z. Flax, Yucca’s, Gardenia’s, Murraya and Bird-of-Paradise, with striking selected succulents as accents.
An extensive driveway of second hand bricks was installed to provide access to the horse stables, house and visitor parking, bordered on both sides by swathes of lush green Flax Lily, Mat Rush and Cardboard Palms, among random sandstone rocks to provide interest.
All the new garden spaces were built with sandstone paving, steel edging and pebble inserts, making use of interesting lighting to highlight key areas and showcase the entire piece.
Several new courtyards with entertainment and living areas were created to ensure the space was liveable for the whole family, and a prominent water feature was installed to give the garden a feeling of tranquillity.
The end result is a beautiful, lush tropical escape that can be enjoyed by everyone – even the horses.

Salt + Dirt | Outside DesignThe home was perched on a massive expanse of lawn that we "right sized" by composing garden beds in correct proportion to the home.
The Client wanted beauty, opulence, lushness, and sensual delight. Climbing roses waves their blossoms in air, backlight by river water light. Ornamental grasses spray like whitewater from between romantic garden favorites: peonies, daisies, delphinium, catmints.
Each species was selected for its solid performance, be it everblooming blossoms, fragrance, or architectural stature. Repetition, proportion, form and rhythm bring order and ease to the eye, whether something is in flower or not.

UserThe owners of this property were completing a full renovation of the house to provide a home for their young family for the next few years. Removing the overgrown existing garden completely, we started with a blank canvas approach to complete a fresh functional outdoor area that maximises every inch of space and provides an attractive setting for the home. Built in bench seating provides the perfect area to sit and watch the children and artificial turf ensures the children can get outside to play all year around. New gates at the entrance provide a secure and attractive entry to the property and ensures the long driveway can be used for toddler's bikes and ride on toys safely. A new storage shed is incorporated on the driveway. Paving down the side of the house provides an attractive outlook from the kitchen, additional storage and easy access to utilities. Planting was kept minimal but with a focus on subtropical plants that will provide interest through colour and foliage texture all year round.
Ocean Road LandscapingThis landscape garden won the 2014 Landscape Victoria Awards for “Plants In the Landscape”. With its natural Stingy Bark twisted trees, the design highlights and enhances these beautiful sculptural trees. The plants are the landscape, attracting wildlife and frogs, with evidence of children climbing and playing in this space. The use of north facing sun has been harnessed in the court yard close to the house, offering a completely different micro-climate, and protection from the southerly breeze.
This landscape garden was in the Open Gardens Australia for a special twilight event in January 2014 & 2015. With features such as decking, stonewalls and plantings that are drought hardy and indigenous. Monies raised from these garden openings were donated to the Anglesea CFA.

“WOW! This is an exceptional garden. The plants in this garden are the landscape. The existing trees have been made features in the overall landscape, and new plantings have been done to compliment and further highlight the existing trees.
The use of native plants in a structured manner has worked really well, and the retention of an undisturbed strip of indigenous vegetation has been sensitively incorporated into the landscape.
It was also great to see that this was a space that was explored and utilised by the whole family.”
