Panelled feature wall??

Our main floor is open (kitchen, dining and family room) with a large empty wall and vaulted ceiling in the family room. I had contemplated filling this wall space with a large art gallery wall or open display shelves but I would absolutely LOVE to do a feature wall of white wainscotting/panelling (see photos below). My questions are 1) would this go with the contemporary(ish) style of my home? 2) would I have to put crown moulding around the entire ceiling on the main floor? 3) where would I stop the wainscotting (ie. on either side of the staircase or just the single wall)? and lastly, 4) would it look weird with the angled ceiling?

i'd go with the art gallery wall. its a better idea seeing your space. angled walls/ceilings don't mix well with crown moldings in any case. save the paneled feature wall for your next house.

I love your space! I noticed a gate in the background so I assume you have kids or pets or both? If so, do you find your glass railings on your stairs difficult to keep clean? We are moving into a new house in a few days and I need to modernize the staircase. I have considered glass, but have 2 kids + one dog and am concerned. Regarding your actual question, I would have expected to see something like reclaimed barnwood or stone work in your inspiration photo and not wainscoting which looks more traditional than the existing style of your space.

Ganz klar Wandfarbe! Denn damit kann man nicht nur den Raum gestalten, sondern auch das Wohnklima deutlich verbessern. Mein absoluter Favorit: Tonfarben! Die Farben, wie z.B. die von Emoton, sehen nicht nur toll aus und regulieren das Raumklima, sondern haben auch die wunderbare Fähigkeit, Giftstoffe aus der Raumluft zu binden. Ein wahres Träumchen und deshalb ganz klar besser als Tapete!

Hi Ella, first of all, let me say that you have some really nice vintage pieces in your home! If you are planning to keep the light grey rug I would go with a darker shade of grey for the daybed and a lighter shade or a completely different color for the fabric of the sidechair (e.g. like the dark blue in your third photo) in order to create more contrast and give the room a more dynamic feel. You also mentioned a portrait to be hung above the sideboard - maybe the colors of this picture can aslo inspire the fabrics, it's always nice if the same color pops up in different details of a room. Danke für die Blumen :) im WC (EG) fehlt das Licht und im Wohnraum würde ich doch auf den Deckenspot in der Sofaecke verzichten zugunsten der "Lichtrahmen" an den Fenstern. In den Kinderzimmern würde ich die Spots stärker zusammenziehen, d.h. die Mittlere 2-er Gruppe lassen, die äußeren aber so weit an die mittlere heranziehen, daß sich zwischen den Leuchten gleichmäßige Quadrate bilden. Das sieht einfach angenehmer aus^^ Als Lichtquelle genügen trotz der Deckenhöhe hier und im Rest des Hauses 3W-LED-Lampen mit satinierter Frontabdeckung. DIe geschalteten Steckdosen in den Kinderzimmern sehe ich eher beide an der Drempelwand in den Raumecken, um ggfls. Licht an den Betten und in der Zuggangsecke schalten zu können, da die dritte freie Raumecke voraussichtlich immer für den Schrankraum genutzt werden, weshalb dort ein Licht eher weniger Sinn macht. LED-Stripes Das Hauptlicht im Bad sollte zwar warmton sein (wegen des Zusammenspiels der übrigen Lichtquellen), aber entsprechend hell, Der LED-Stripe wäre also hier ein 50/50, 60 LED je lfm, 355 cm Länge (sollte ~5 cm vor den Wänden enden, um keine starken Lichtkegel an die Wände zu zeichnen). Das entspricht dann einer Leistung von rd. 52W und einer Lichtabgabe von ~2800 lm (im Vergleich: 150 W Halogenlicht über die gesamte Breite). Das ergibt einen vernünfigen Deckenfluter als Grundbeleuchtung. Für den Mehrbedarf an Licht gibt es ja das Spiegellicht. Treppe Vorsicht bei dem Einsatz von LED-Licht in Stripes in Treppenhäusern: das Licht ist so hell, daß eine Addition der Lichtquellen zu einem sehr starken Licht im Raum führt mit scharfen Schlagschatten. Ein beleuchteter Handlauf zB. ist schön, aber eher etwas für öffentliche Treppenhäuser, nichts aber für gemütlihce Wohnhäuser, wenn man am Abend nur den Weg nach oben in die Schlafräume finden möchte.

Hi Nicola, thank you so so much. Its just so nice. So pretty. The good thing is its not a mind bender. I was already thinking something on the lines. But the elements had to fit together. And now it looks they do. What I had not thought at all is the upholstery thing. It’s so nice. Even if I cannot do uphostry , I have gotten the idea now. I would somehow make the back of shelves and the heastbound side of bed same or coordinated, in order to make it kind of cozy niche corner as you have nicely put it. For shelves I was thinking to use a single piece or may a two pieces of 4x4 shelves like IKEA Kalax to creat a kind of partition of about 120 cm As I said I was thinking of similar things but as it comes from an expert I feel very happy. One more thing. For the colors would you recommend the ones I see already in the Sketsch??? Secondly, for the floor in the second / Upper room i was thinking of using small rugs in different colors witha kind of collage ( the pupose being easy maintainece, as a bigger carpet has to be send for professional carpet cleaners or need carpet cleaning machine). Small rugs if one is spoiled is easier to replace , which not easy in case of a bigger one that is wall to wall and heavy. Small rugs are easy to clean an rearrange. Of course under that I can add a light floor matt under these rugs to hold them together.( In both cases what colors , should be good. I mean if I add one piece carpet that would be almost half of the room, which colors should I take) or do you think it will make the rather smaller place look too busy and I should go for a full size carpet? Go for the molding!! Its the right choice for a feature. However, I suggest a contemporary design rather than the traditional molding you pictured. There are limitless configurations and the price is all basically the same. Think outside of the box (pun intended).
