Black ceramic planters containing privet standards and festive annuals flank the stone patio stairs leading from a wrought iron railed outdoor eating area to a formal gravel path. Colorful garden beds are bordered by English boxwood in classic Arts and Crafts style.

An overview of the back yard shows one method of effectively dividing a patio into different rooms without chopping up the space. The small carriage walk on the left, while seldom used, binds the spaces and completes the design thought. Landscape design by John Algozzini. Photo Courtesy of Mike Crews Photography.

A Traditional Landscape Loses the Lawn & Overgrown Shrubs To Low Water Plants
A Traditional Landscape Loses the Lawn & Overgrown Shrubs To Low Water Plants

The traditional fountain and surroundings are embellished with a variety of drought tolerant grasses, flowering plants and succulents. The removal of the dense and overgrown shrubs provides more outdoor living space for dining and entertaining for the homeowners' enjoyment. And now with site-appropriate plants and no lawn there is less maintenance and a lower water bill. Full color Blue stone and small mexican pebbles replace the lawn and pathways resulting in an updated and contemporary transformation. A variety of low-water plants including succulents offer year-round appeal and interest throughout the seasons. Photos and Design © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design

The main goals of this project was to make it more usable and enjoyable for the owner, to reduce maintenance and to created a covered area for enjoyment year-round. This design also kept the family's new puppy in mind - fencing it in for safety and planting with careful consideration of plants that are safe for dogs. The winding pathway for humans is reminiscent of a stream bed and there is also a narrow perimeter fence specifically for the pup! Ben Park
