Antwort auf: When I am building-in a tub and/or shower, I almost always put in 3/4 inch plywood as a full backing for the tile backer board and/or sheetrock walls (un-flat molded plastic shower walls are tough to block decently). I can't stand knowing I put blocking in the wrong location(s) and attempting to mount grab bars, either now or later, without a good backing is unfair to someone slipping and grabbing for support. If you have them installed and the installer uses toggle bolts or any other kind of wall anchor, kick 'im out! Drywall screws are also not sufficient.

Antwort auf: White is in style. If you're doing a beach motif then make it white along with your fixtures. White is summery and beachy. Don't do the out of date wall niche that the cultured marble folk have been doing for 30 years - make it rectangular to match current styles in tile showers. Make sure your framing is absolutely straight, plumb, square, level, true etc. Insist on cbu - cultured marble folks still like to do greenboard. Insist on a poly vapor barrier behind the cbu. Paint the cbu white so that the grey does not come thru. Insure that the cultured marble panels are straight, square, level and overlap in the corners. Do not accept pieces or edges that are just butted up against each other. Better maintain your caulk lines religiously because that is what is what keeps the water from getting behind the cultured marble. What are you doing for your vanity? The reason I'm asking is if you get too many different materials it may not flow. If you do a vanity top, have the backsplash done the same way stone countertops are done - with a separate piece. Antwort auf: Love your shower/tub as I mentioned but also wanted to say that if we are able to go this way, I plan for us to have some grab bars - one horizontal probably along the length of the tile wall and ALSO one vertical on the right as we get into the shower and maybe even a small horiontal bar (combined with a niche) beneath the fixed shower head. I had a dear friend die recently from a fall and at the funeral, the first thing her son said when he was eulogizing was that everyone, young and old should be sure to have bars in the shower! (before going on to say the normal kind of touching things about his mother...) I'm a good one for taking advice sometimes. This is one time that when you decide you need bars, it is probably too late. Also remodeling makes it easier to put in "blocking" so the grab bars can be more strongly attached to the wall. Sorry to get off the subject but thought I'd use this as a soap box to anyone remodeling a shower/bath.

Antwort auf: FWIW, we have two Toto 1525 cast iron tubs with no-slip grips on the bottom, as well as a Kohler cast iron shower pan with no-slip on the bottom as well. Ours look as clean and white as the day we got them, and they really aren't difficult to clean. Every week to two weeks I clean-clean the tubs (we wipe ours out with a paper towel after showering to get rid of loose hair, or errant blobs of shaving cream, or conditioner). I spray with Lysol aerosol bathroom spray, let sit (for however long it takes me to clean the sink, toilet, tub surround), re-spray if needed, and then clean it off with hot water from the tub filler faucet, and a wet microfiber cloth. That's it. If the no-slip grips do happen to look grimy (very dirty bare feet will sometimes leave smudges, as will the bottoms of rubber soled work boots worn by someone working on the plumbing or tile), I will take a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, dampen it, and go over the floor of the tub with it (usually a light rub is all it needs, occasionally it takes a slightly stronger touch). To address the height/stepping into the tub "issue", you can have the tub "recessed" into your floor. Our plumber told DH to use thicker plywood for the second layer of sub-flooring, after the tub went in, so the sub-floor under the tub ended up being a little lower than the floor surrounding the tub when all was said and done. This way, the step into/out of the tub is easier. HTH!
