Architect and home design
A basic rule of thumb is that using analogous (or adjacent) colors on the wheel will create less contrast and a more calm feel, while choosing complementary colors (across from one another on the wheel) will create greater contrast and a higher-energy room. Understanding the relationships between colors will help you see why certain combinations have certain effects on you.
Iverson designed the long steel natural-gas fireplace, and the pros at Cutting Edge Landscape & Design built it. Next he had them fabricate wall-mounted linear horizontal planters to wrap the corner; the foliage adds softness and color. Iverson had the walls capped with a black metal detail that coordinates with the fireplace and planters, providing a finished look along the top of the walls.
"This is a resilient product," says Otto. "The raschel knit of the fabric means if it is punctured, the puncture will not spread." The fabric and thread also resist mildew. While some waterproof fabrics are on the market, they don't have the same stretching abilities and do not get this crisp and taut look.
What exactly are shade sails? Typically, they're made of a fabric called HDPE (high-density polypropylene mesh), a form of plastic that is about as recyclable as a plastic milk carton. However, they do not have a plastic look to them because of a knitted weave, tautness provided by the tension and porousness. They generally block 90 to 95 percent of the sun's harmful UV rays.

Color, material combos
2018 trend toward rich colors. Warm grays with rich, earthy shades will edge out cooler neutrals for a more sumptuous look. “I’m seeing a move toward warm grays and rich, earthy shades of camel, rust, tobacco and brown-blacks,” Ott says.

When painting a half wall, you can paint to halfway up the wall or to any height you wish. Stopping the paint a bit above the eye line will let the color stand out more, while stopping it below will leave more of the white or neutral hue to create a more open and airy effect.

The design of the facades is a study in balancing the existing brick structure with the addition, which is clad in rich, modern ATAS metal siding and cedar. V-shaped steel siding was used for texture on the majority of the new walls, creating varying vertical bands of light and shadow.

. The tall wicker basket visually balances the top-heavy tree, and it’s likely that the actual pot is propped up within the basket to give the illusion of a taller tree — a great trick to use anytime

For this Seattle stairwell, DeForest Architects used 12-gauge perforated stainless steel for the steps. The handrail along the side walls was custom-made by Five Star Metals.

Many midcentury houses have carports that lead right to the front door. The carport then functions as a covered entrance and parking spot in one
This updated midcentury home in Seattle has a post-and-beam carport attached. With the addition of a storage unit to the side of the carport, the homeowners can stealthily store items such as bikes, gardening tools and trash cans, typically stored in garages.

Stacked-stone tiles cover the wall that continues from the bedroom into the adjacent bathroom. “We didn’t want anything too shiny,” says McElroy. “So we choose stone that has a rough, unfinished texture and color that is reminiscent of the actual concrete.”
